    Unsolicited Camino Prep Ideas

On the Camino Francés there are several services, Jacotrans is one, almost every albergue will have envelopes available. Ask the hospitaliro which one serves the area best.

Phone Service while traveling - Holafly?

One final note, I often did not connect to public WiFi if I had a 4G/5G connection as the mobile connection was often faster and certainly more secure. I did use a VPN on public WiFi.

Phone Service while traveling - Holafly?

I don’t know how much data I used, not streaming much. Used Google Maps occasionally and video chats with my wife. Mostly WhatsApp calls which worked very well. I was more concerned about it working when I needed/wanted and it did.

Phone Service while traveling - Holafly?

I wanted to wrap up loose ends, this thread started a couple months ago regarding data/phone plans while on the Camino. I was using Holafly for the first time and it seemed to be working well but it was early on. I had an Holafly eSIM with unlimited data (90 days), an Austrian phone number (60...

    Unsolicited Camino Prep Ideas

I understand completely, I was fortunate to be walking with a friend from Ireland I met in 2017. He’s a great walking partner and we encouraged each other on the tough days. We also met more great pilgrims along the way. Take it slow, and take time to smell the flowers. Age probably won’t stop...

    Unsolicited Camino Prep Ideas

I've now completed 3 Caminos including the Francés, Inglés (with a León-Sarria side trip) and Arles-Aragónes-Francés. I've hiked and backpacked most of my life. I've learned from others and by making mistakes on preparation and packing. I've attached a PDF with some thoughts on preparing, as a...

Phone Service while traveling - Holafly?

I’ve been using Holafly for over a month starting in Oloron-Sante-Marie in France, across the Camino Aragónes and now on the Francés currently in Rabinal. The service has been fast and connections have been good. WhatsApp works great. Limited telephone time (60 mins) and you can’t access SMS...

US International Phone plan or Spanish SIM card while on the Camino?

Holafly eSIM update. I’ve now been using Holafly for 10 days in France an rural Spain. I’ve had good tele signal almost everywhere ranging from 3G (didn’t know it was still used), LTE, 4G and most of the time, 5G. The few calls have connected easily and WhatsApp works great. At this point, I...

US International Phone plan or Spanish SIM card while on the Camino?

I’m using Holafly eSIM, it’s working great. I have unlimited data and 60 mins. of tele. Using WhatsApp for communication and the connection has been very good here in France. Spain tomorrow, I’ll update then. 90 days, $99. They offer shorter plans as well.

Should I bring my own Mercado bag?

I use a very similar very lightweight day pack, weighs next to nothing, packs down to nothing and serves multiple purposes.

    Vodaphone Travel eSim

I'll let everyone know once I start using it next week. Not being a heavy data user, I may not find out. I used one in the UK and had no problem though. Stay tuned!

    My backpack creaks

Same pack, same squeak/creak, I got used to it and missed it when it wasn’t there. But, maybe it’s just me. I wish you good luck on your scheduled departure and always, Buen Camino Fabian.

Please help me to figure out how to phone ahead for accommodation

From my UK number, I’ve never had a problem using the +34 dialing but, 00 is a safe bet too. Regards my UK number, who knows what Brexit will bring. 🤷‍♂️

    Should I pack my kindle?

After 2 Caminos, I had few occasions to read. There were showers, laundry, an occasional nap, exploring, maybe a beer (or 2), dinner and finally packing up for the next day. On the few occasions I was not sound asleep within 10 minutes, I used the Kindle app on my phone. Less weight, less to...

Is the Osprey Atmos/Aura 50 AG the best Camino backpack ever?

Discussions about packs, boots, poles and socks should be elevated to a philosophical status as, IMHO, the only correct answer is the answer that’s correct for you. Excellent points for comparing different models though. 😎

Is the Osprey Atmos/Aura 50 AG the best Camino backpack ever?

Mark, I would have to agree overall. I wore the Atmos 50 on my first Camino (Frances) in 2017 and found it to be very adjustable and comfortable. I did not take the top compartment and still had more than enough room. I also liked being able to partition the pack to make an internal...
