Walking at 4 am. Under a full moon?

I strongly encourage you to follow through with your idea. I soloed the Camino which gave me the flexibility to walk at whatever time I wanted. 4 o'clock is a great time but you'll need your headlamp to help navigate the pitch black trails and avoid missing the yellow directional arrrows. The...

    no toilet paper in washroom

Two quick points. Pack a 1/3 roll of tp and remove the center cardboard to save space. Second (in general), PLEASE do not throw used tissues (#1) on the ground - take a ziplock and pack it out.

Has the Camino Frances become a victim of its own success?

Dear Pilgrim, I get it! I soloed the Camino Francis, starting mid September 2016. I purposefully selected the fall for the moderate weather and to AVOID crowds. As it turned out it was a good call. I realize time has since passed and the popularity of the Camino has only grown. Such is life...

Camino is Finished but not done Walking

Take a look at the Alpe-Adria Trail (AAT). 475 miles. Austria - Slovenia - Croatia. The trail is well market and has a good infrastructure . Like the Camino, the AAT is broken down in segments. Check it out.

Walking the Camino Frances on stilts

I cannot imagine any plausible reason for someone to do this. "Dumb" comes to mind. Let's not make the Camino a circus.

    Hiking at Night?

By all means! I often awakened around 3 am or 4 am and started hiking. On a starlit night, its an amazing, sometimes, unnerving, experience. Give it a try and see what you think.

Will I need a Head Torch?

Hello Steve, you won't need a head lamp if you start hiking around 7 a.m. Zip. However, I'm glad I took a head lamp as I realized the wonderful dimension of hiking earlier in the morning - uncrowded and under tranquil, star lit heavens. Where there is a ying , there is a yang. Rover

Is anyone doing the Camino without any specific purpose

Make up your mind, friend! If you want to walk the Camino but don't know why . . . then bag it and move on to another project. Frankly, you're all over the map . . . decide what you want and either do it or move on to another project.

    Gaiters

Flash! When did it become common for rain in September? You might want to do some research on this. As far as gaiters are concerned, that's a personal preference. I am an avid hiker and generally find them unnecessary. Yes, you will get a pebble in your shoe or boot from time to time, but...

Is anyone doing the Camino without any specific purpose

Hello Jane. A few years ago, I read about the Camino and decided I would walk/hike it, not for any religious purpose but for the challenge. I went solo, starting September 19th and finishing 6 weeks later on November 4th. At the beginning, everyone asked the question, "why are you walking the...

What to pack for my First Camino?

Last thought . . . I walked the CF solo a couple of years ago. When asked, "why" I had not reason other than the challenge, to see if I could endure 500 miles - - plus getting lost a few tims. As the end closed in, I was asked what are you going to tell friends and family when they ask about...

What to pack for my First Camino?

It comes down to wants and needs. get rid of earplugs, face mask, unnecessary electronics. keep in mind water is plentiful along the CF so you don't need to overly burden yourself with that. a liner is fine for shoulder and summer months. alburgues always have blankets if needed...

    SJPDP to Orisson?

NO! What the hurry? Depending where you are traveling from, your might be tired and need some time to acclimate in St. Jean. I arrived about the same time as you, had a few hours to unpack and walk into the village. The following day I went deeper into my exploration and enjoyed a few nice...

    Raincoat or poncho?

Whatever you are most comfortable with. I think poncho's are bulky and uncomfortable so I choose a highly packable 6 ounce rain shell which doubled as another layer when needed. Go with the rain shell, more functional, lighter weight and easy to pack

    Clothes lines

I took a 10 foot clothes line and safety pins and used it whenever line space was not available. In addition to the alburges outdoor line, I used my line primarily for indoors, stretching the line from one end of my bunk to the other. This was particularly handy in inclimate weather. Do it...

Walking the Camino Frances multiple times - why?

Sorry Bob, I cannot help you. I walked the CF once (solo) and that was enough for me. There are too many great hikes and adventures to experience. Check out the Alpe-Adria Trail. Richard

Taking a cat on the Camino in May/June 2020

The Camino is no place for a cat. Leave it at home and FaceTime with it.

    My First Camino

Good Day, Tom. I am excited for you as you prepare to embark on a trek of a lifetime. I walked the full CF three years ago; started my trek September 19th and completed it on November 4th! Like you, I am not a religious person; I chose the Camino simply for the challenge, nothing more or less...

I can't get through to Refugio Orisson!

You know what they say about the squeeking hinge . . . there is not easy answer to your frustration. It took me several months to get a response from them. If guess they are booked now so strongly consider your options as few as they may be. I believe there is a little talked about alburque a...
