(29M USA) Achilles problem - how serious is it and medical care

Please update us on your situation when you can. FWIW: In November 2023 I made the mistake of continuing on the Norte when I developed left achilles tendonitis and bilateral plantar fasciitis. I tried stopping early a few days. I tried stopping a day to rest. I tried taking a bus and taking a...

What if your backpack gets lost?

Very happy to hear this! Years ago I heard a travel agent say "There are two kinds of luggage: Carry-on and lost." Since then I never check my backpack. And as experienced travelers recommend, if ever I did check a suitcase, my carry-on would have several days of essentials that would get me...

    Lightweight cooking Pot or Cup?

BC (Before COVID) I found albergues to have such a variety of utensils in the kitchens, it was easy for me to prep my vegetarian meals. After lock down, I was shocked kitchens had nothing or next to nothing. Even newly remodeled albergues might have a microwave or a stove, but no way to use...

    The Taking of Gloves Paradox

Many years ago I bought a pair of wind-proof gloves from REI. They weigh next to nothing (really!), and have tiny bits on the fingertips to help with grip. I found that while not waterproof, they repel most of a moderate rain. They are not insulated, so if you are in sub-freezing temps, you'll...

    Lightweight cooking Pot or Cup?

I am happy I read your comment, Jeff! I got a laugh about how we Americans eat--and yes, that is how we do it in all 50 states. We just don't think of it being called 'American style'! When I was doing post-graduate work in England many years ago, The Society for Overseas Students said something...

    Abandoned elderly pilgrims

This story touched my heart, Dov. I am glad you were a blessing to this man, and that you were placed in each others' paths at the right time. As an older person (I cannot get myself to use the term 'elderly' just yet!), I understand the dangers of walking alone, but that's how I've travel...

Injured after stage one and upset

And stretch before you start out!!!! Many people do not realize knee pain is connected to hip flexors.

    Winter Caminho to Fatima

Thanks for posting this query. I am hoping to do something similar next year so will be following answers to your questions, and hope that you will post more while you are walking.😊

The price of coffee in Spain and the perplexing economics of it

    I'm glad I don't drink coffee!

Most stupid question prize winner (Eyeglasses category)

Even Chums didn't work for you? They usually cling tightly.

    Is this crazy?

What I learn from the Camino every time I walk is that God/the Universe/Higher Power/The Camino is to be trusted. Even went things go screwy (as they occasionally do) it works out OK and something good comes of it.

    Waist/front Pack

The only way I could get myself to drink water as I should was to use a Platypus bladder and tube attached right near my shoulder. I carry a cross-body bag (5 liter size I believe it is) for 'immediate necessities.'

    Drink water to keep hydrated

LIVE from the Camino Slow and Steady

Too right, CWBuff! I'm old and remember when airports were fun, and friends could meet you at the gate when you came in from disembarking the plane--even from front and rear doors! And you weren't considered guilty till proven innocent.

Albergue with privacy curtain (and towel)

They are nice. There's a newly opened one near the Santiago airport just a short walk from the highway called albergue a Fabrica with curtains and locker (not sure about towel since I had my own). Good kitchen and bathroom. Light on the heat in winter though.

    Happy Shavuot!!!

Thanks for bringing this up, scruffy. I know little of this tradition so had to start reading. Things started falling into place, thanks to you!

    Be careful with phones.

A man after my own heart. Do you carry a camera as you travel? A pocket calendar? A few years back someone gave me an old iPod, which I used to take photos and log in things on the calendar and check email. After it disappeared from church a year ago, I tried to get a replacement iPod but since...
