LIVE from the Camino Back again and loving it

Nearly in Santiago now and just a few observations, the Camino Frances never looked cleaner , it is a credit to the authorities. Some idiot from Wales has done untold graffiti damage and surely he should be easily identified from his registrations each night . The food generally seems better The...

LIVE from the Camino Back again and loving it

In Hontanas tonight and met some wonderful people, it is great to be back . Temperatures are cooler than last June , everybody has got a bed and it is still fantastic value , €13 for a bed ( it is €10 down the street) and a communal meal also €13 . Every nationality here and we heard there is...

Pilgrim office statistics from SJPDP - numbers up 33% on last year (Apr 2023)

It’s worth noting since you last walked in 2019 that a good number of Albergues have either closed for good or had not re opened in 2022 , I also walked in 2019 but returned in 21 and 22. It’s bed shortages that cause the panic with rumours reaching back to walkers several days back

    Pamplona - 1 day or 2 ?

I think it depends on your age more than anything , I think ( for me personally ) Pamplona is the most vibrant , exciting city on the Camino and Pilgrims of a certain age will enjoy the atmosphere more than Pilgrims who are looking for a rest . Also beware because Rest days and sightseeing...

Poles & Backpack - to check or not to check...

Ours got through Dublin to Biarritz in our backpacks as hand luggage but were confiscated in Madrid security check heading home . Despite a female security person telling her colleague that we were pilgrims who had walked and that they were no threat .

Is this the CF best kept secret? (Alternative route after Villatuerta or Estella)

I took this route on a really hot 🥵 day by accident and it’s a long hard slog uphill till Luquin with no stops. I went the the other way this year for the second time and I preferred it but Luquin was a nice village to stop in so it’s definitely worth doing the alternative route

Differences in the walking experience - pre vs post Covid?

We started on May 26 , Orrison was half full, Zubiri was full and getting a meal there was difficult , Pamplona on a Saturday was busy ( as you would expect ) but no bed issues after that till Burgos. I think people put too much value on what Booking.com says on availability . Azofra which is a...

    Municipal Albergue Ages

We just had dinner in the Municipal Albergue in Ages and if anyone of you are planning to stop in Ages give it a go . A young Spanish girl who left her job is renting it and really deserves support . It’s spotless , communal meal and really friendly . Easily the nicest Albergue in Ages . Only...
