    What Size Water Bottle/s

I typically use a 1-litre 58-pattern water bottle, which mates perfectly with a steel Crusader cup. It’s important to get a genuine Osprey cup, as the cheap copies are not as sturdy and more importantly their caps leak. I do not generally bother with the matching Osprey plastic mug.

The Way: how do you feel about THE movie?

Sorry, can’t be bothered. There are so many good movies to watch. ;)

The Way: how do you feel about THE movie?

Yes, I wish so too. Unfortunately, all of the main characters are so unlikeable - in my opinion - that I just could not become sufficiently interested/invested to care about their transformations.

The Way: how do you feel about THE movie?

I would certainly not expect fluency, but learning a very few simple words and phrases in another language does not take long. It is the polite thing to do when visiting another country. “Hello” “My name is ...” “Please” “Thank you” “Excuse me” “Do you speak English?”

Listening to music while on the camino

Call me a curmudgeon but I dislike it when someone starts a thread asking a random question without providing any background or sharing their own experience/opinion. 🤨

The Way: how do you feel about THE movie?

Many people have enjoyed the movie, and some have been inspired to do their own Camino. So that’s good. I wanted to like it, but the two times I have viewed I found it literally unwatchable and could not finish it. Particularly problematic for me was the arrogant way that Martin Sheen’s...

How often do you take a break?

I don’t they are necessary; but they are certainly nice to have. Many hikers save and carry Amazon bubble wrap packages. Those are lightweight and about the right size for most people. And if you find they are more trouble than they are worth, they are disposable. My wife and I use 18” x 18”...

First Time Pilgrim - What Day Bag?

Savotta’s Jääkäri Small would be a great choice. Its capacity is nominally 20 litres, but by letting the straps out can easily be expanded to hold about 25 litres whenever needed. And if desired the ample PALS webbing permits various pouches to attached (I like one or two 9 mm pistol magazine...

How light was your backpack for Camino Frances (800 km)

    In your opinion.

Backpacks only policy in Albergues: A common restriction?

You misunderstood my post. I referenced her purported rules that pilgrims must walk (as opposed to cycling, riding horseback, taking buses, etc.) and must carry everything (rather than using bag transport).

Backpacks only policy in Albergues: A common restriction?

When did the Diocese of Santiago impose these strict requirements?

The electric coil changed my life on the Camino!

    Nescafé: ‘no es café’. ;)

    Carabiners or “S” hook?

I like GrimLocs, which are lightweight but quite strong enough for attaching things (45 lbs tensile strength when mounted right side up, 15 lbs when mounted upside down). Their breakaway feature makes them safer than carabiners if you accidentally get caught on something. They work...

    Headlamp question

I have owned Petzl headlamps and found them to be rather cheaply made and unreliable. YMMV but that was my experience. I currently own two Fenix headlamps, and consider them much higher quality. One is a lithium-powered rechargeable with micro USB port, plenty of power and many output levels...

Buying Camper Stove Fuel on the Trail

+1. Alcohol stoves are commercially available (Trangia, Evernew, Toaks, etc.), and are inexpensive, lightweight and compact. They are slower than a Jetboil system, but silent. It’s also quick and easy to make a simple version, no special materials or equipment required. See How to Make a Fancee...

    Too many poor pilgrims?

Shame on him/her. Stereotyping is never cool.

    Tea on the go

Hello Carla, Have you done your Camino? If so, please report on how you addressed your tea issue, and how well your chosen gear worked out for you. Thanks! Yes. It really depends. I love using camping stoves (especially alcohol stoves), and enjoy the self-sufficiency they provide. If not in...

For coffee addicts that like to walk early

Those 3-in-1 sachets are undeniably convenient, but most are full of dodgy ingredients (artificially sweeteners, palm oil, emulsifiers, etc.). Just saying. May be of interest:

    “March or Die”

Reminds me of the following passage from Tony Herbert’s book Soldier (1973), discussing the 2nd Battalion, 503rd Airborne Infantry Regiment during the 1960’s: The training exercises were increasing in number and intensity, and one afternoon, while I was leading a company on an exercise whose...

How to get my parents permission to go?

^^^ This ^^^ Here is my suggestion: tell your parents - in a pleasant and non-confrontational manner - that you will be walking a Camino in the Spring or Summer of 2023. You are not seeking their permission, or asking for their advice; you are just giving them advance notice of your plans, as a...
