Travel to Saint Jean from Barcelona

Last month, we bussed Barcelona to Pomplona and then took a taxi to St. Jean. Taxi was negotiated before departure at 150 euros for 2 passengers. Taxi driver was an aspiring race car driver. No accident, but ridiculous ride.

    Compostela: Electric Bikes Excluded?

Interesting,,, I live on Texas, have biked Colorado, New Mexico and most of the states over to Florida. Bike back, car back, car up, etc. is real common. Left and right is usually just car warnings. Now that you say it,,, maybe I'm the wierdo that's applying to walking as well 😉

    Compostela: Electric Bikes Excluded?

I just finished Frances last week. As a percentage, bikes are still low. In 4 weeks there was not a day without a fast bike encounter. Yes, there are very some considerate riders. There are also NOT considerate. When 2 "pedal bikes" are going up a hill and the non-electric is being pulled by...

    Compostela: Electric Bikes Excluded?

Your response implies it is the walkers fault if a collision occurs. There should not be a "fright response" at all. I've been road biking, mountain biking and walking for over 60 years. Learn your place. If by bell, voice or slower movement the "fright" cant be removed, then the bike should...

    Compostela: Electric Bikes Excluded?

I think "bike back" may be US usage thing. When the bikes were coming through groups of walkers I was hollering "bike back" to warn others. I had a couple of people tell me they had never heard that before. 😉

    Compostela: Electric Bikes Excluded?

E-bikes are now using 350 to 700 watt (and more) motors. That's nearly the same as a small chainsaw motor. It would NOT be ok to put a chainsaw motor on a bike to get a compostella. But, at least you could hear them coming from behind!! They are essentially electric motorcycles now. They should...

    Be careful with phones.

Great job folks! I posted the issue because I imagined there would be some good hints to share. 40+ comments , still on topic and MANY good tricks/suggestions to help others. I.personally am not very dependent on the phone. Maps, guides and communication only. My pants have zippered pockets...

    Be careful with phones.

My friend got pick-pocketed in Barcelona. Took just a few minutes to realize, but it was too late. Here's the concern. He had EVERYTHING on his phone. Credit cards, airline reservations, maps, contacts, everything. Only phone number he could remember was his wife's number back in US. He...

    Snoring. AARRRGGGGHHHHH!!!!

If we're gonna talk about snoring, might as well throw in people opening windows. Just finished 5 weeks on CF. My buddy snores lightly in a warm room and ROARS in a cold room. Guess what? When people open the windows it gets cold, it gets loud. I'll take noise over cold any time 😉

standard of living/quality of life in Spain

I posted nice constructive comments earlier on this string to try to generate thoughts about the cultural differences. Then you just had to start attacking America. Since the moderators seem to have either quit paying attention to this string,,, or they agree with the American attacks. Lets...

standard of living/quality of life in Spain

Another thing being overlooked is weather. In my small town US community, when the weather is cooperative, (early spring and late fall) we have dances on the plaza and street dining at main street restaurants. But,,, that's a very limited amount of the year. When it's 30C+ and 70% humidity...

    Backpack size

Just for grins, I looked up the data for Osprey packs. In the range from 26L (956g) to 58L(1334g) the pack weight varied 377 grams. (13oz.) The packs can be adjusted to contain/control minimum to maximum FILL (up to FULL) At around 200 euros per pack, if you buy the most you "could need", then...

    Backpack size

I will 2nd that! I love my Exos 48. COMFORTABLE at 12 kilos on AT or 6.5 kilos on Camino. You don't have to fill it 😉

standard of living/quality of life in Spain

I wondered the same before and looked at stats as well. At that time, it showed 28% unemployment and median income of 24,000 euro annual, so it's NOT about the money. Then, at home I paid more attention to people. I looked around inside my stores and restaurants. I watched people interacting...

Has the dog “policy” on the Camino changed?

I've heard dogs in a couple of pensions this trip. I'm a dog person at home, so not a biggie. Might disturb some.

    Temperature in albergues

Just saw a "legal looking" sign on the wall that said maximum allowable heat is 19C. That's 66F. I think only a couple of places in the last 4 weeks have come even close to that warm. I don't like cold. I carry a set of mid-weight wool long-johns and a lightweight quilt for sleeping. I've...

Lost & Found Backpack stolen from albergue in León

I'm tech a tech dummy. My friend did the screen saver setup. Ask a youngster to help, they know all the tricks 😏 Hidden air tag installed Just in case

Lost & Found Backpack stolen from albergue in León

I was just gonna ask, does she have contact info in pack? That would help. I also put screen saver contact number on cell phone. It has saved me a phone before 😉

León to San Martin del Camino alternative route

Did south route last time, I liked it 😀 Doing north route tomorrow as well because my friend wants to cut distance on his sore knee. Maybe we can compare notes tomorrow night.
