Thanks for that. I'm not always known for my Common sense but having done the CF from SJ-Santiago-Atlantic in 2016 and from SJ to Burgos in 2019 as I'm getting my fitness back I'm seriously thinking of getting myself to Burgos and starting again from there. Yes this will be going through the...
Hi Rachel, so what would you say about the terrain for say a couple of weeks beyond Bilbao? I know I'm not up to it yet if its as tough as the first week from Irun.
I have only walked the Del Norte from Irun to Bilbao in May 2018. I had previously walked the CF 2016 and Portuguese 2017. I was at the time in my late 50's and in decent hiking shape although I will accept that I have never been a mountain goat on the steeps. I actually on the whole found it...
I did a short trip from Irun to Bilbao back at the beginning of May and finding cafes and places to eat was a challenge. Ended up carrying emergency food to keep the energy levels up. Considering getting back to Bilbao late September and pushing on a bit further.
I did a short trip from Irun to Blbao starting on the 1st of May. Having previously done the Frances and Portuguese. I found this section very hard probably not helped that it was so wet and muddy. What was just as challenging was the unsurety of knowing whether cafes etc were actually going to...
Take a coach or train from Bayonne railway station to Hendaye which is just over the French side of the bridge from Irun. The bridge is just a 5-10 minute walk from Hendaye Staion and is the official start of the Del Norte.
I appreciate that it is quieter at the beginning of May but I just walked a small section of the Del Norte from Irun to Bilbao and even whilst stopping to eat and rest would only see 2/3 other walkers all day never mind walk with them. That being said the way the accomadation was located you do...
Started the Del Norte on May 3 from Irun and due to personal logistics was only going to walk a small section of it to Bilbao.
For those that have walked the Frances and loved the social liaison with other walkers just beware as pointed out by many this Camino is very different. Obviously a lot...
Arrived yesterday in Bilboa having walked from Irun. The first 5 days were tougher than in my opinion any day on the Frances. Yes I stayed at the Orrison.
As for food, it’s a lottery to what is open, either during the walk or even in the evenings. As the Albergue in Lazama was closed a number...
Friends of mine booked a trip for the rugby last October and even then there was nowhere to stay within 30 minute drive of Bilbao. They in October booked onto a Camp site 40 minutes Taxi drive away from Bilbao. Albergues should be for Pilgrims but getting into a pension within 30 minutes of...
I started the Del Norte on Wednesday the 3rd at Irun, I’m just doing the first section to maybe Bilbao. You can almost go all day without seeing a soul which can be quite a culture shock if you have done the Frances like me you like occasionally like having a little chat whilst walking through...
Well I’m on route to Stansted airport and hopefully land in Biarritz 5pm this evening. Once how I’ve figured to get to Irun on a public holiday this evening I intend to start walking tomorrow morning. The weather like everywhere has been unpredictable but it looks like it’s set to improve.
Once...
Arriving at Biarritz airport on Ryanair Flight from Stansted on Tuesday 1st of May about 5pm and intended to get the Euskadi Express 816 bus/coach to Hendaye, then presumably I'll walk over the bridge into Irun. Only just realised that Tuesday is a public holiday in Spain? Is it also in France...
Hi Carla, I set off from Irun this Wednesday the 2nd of May. I was thinking the same about how many are likely to be on the trail. Perhaps the wise and good on here can enlighten us.
I arrive at Biarritz on the 1st May and was going to get the bus/coach from the airport down to Irun. If it's a Public Holiday will this service still be running?
Flight booked to Biarritz 1st of May, bus to Irun that evening hopefully. Find somewhere suitable to sleep and head off into the unknown on the 2nd of May.
Hi Rose, I have just booked a flight out to Biarritz on the 1st of May, Was originally going to fly the 3rd but forgot it was Bank Holiday Weekend here in UK so so flight was almost triple the price. I have the Wise Pilgrim Guide Book. Is it that you have downloaded or the app? If so do you...
I'll be interested to see how you are getting on. Was considering flying out next week and doing the Norte from Irun but various posts talk about a lot of Albergues being shut and few pilgrims on the trail. Happy to walk in my own company but do like to mix and socialise with others at times...
