@mspath - Lo Siento
I searched my photo catalog for 2012 and 2014, but cannot find anything that looks like a match.
I was surprised that in my 2 year gap, there were several places that seemed to have disappeared or changed. There were certain places that Beth and I both remarked were...
Note: The Hotel is in an old communal oven site, and the larger cooking pit forms the center of the structure. It has been lovingly cared for by the owner/managers who live on the property.
In 2014, the flechas led directly past the Hotel Akerreta, where we stayed for the night. So glad we did: met some cool folks (with whom we are still friends), had a lovely room and dinner, shared some stories with the owner who was a Jai Alai player here in Florida for years under the name...
Astorga. Beautiful and unique town. Fabulous Bishop's Palace and nice cathedral. Laid back, restful.
And you'll need a day off after trying Cocido Maragato (https://casamaragata.com/), for the hearty peregrinos.
Buen Camino
Good advice above.
Smart to book your first couple of days at reasonable (easy) distances.
After that, we used booking-dot-com for private accommodations as needed.
I know lots of folks do not like those web sites, but they are most convenient (which you pay for, slightly), and easy to use from...
Another for Hostel Arriazu. Beth had a touch of tummy flu in the morning, and they were very good about letting us stay over, and helping to find a Farmacia.
Room was clean and comfortable. Location was great.
Where did you stay in Lavacolla? We have twice stayed at a Pazo there, mostly because it was easy to find.
I like staying in Lavacolla, because we can walk into SdC in the morning arriving just before the Pilgrim mass.
"I don’t understand. I was simply stating a fact. As I mentioned multiple times each of us does our own Camino. I make no judgement on others. Walk 5k, drive your Camino and get stamps. It’s your Camino. Burn Camino to you and every pilgrim."
Sorry, Kevin. I do not mean to attack you...
I enjoy and like your write up, but have to point out that you perpetuate my pet peeve.
"...with the influx of the pilgrims walking the last 100K to Santiago which still qualifies them for a Compostela...".
Unless something has changed recently, that last 100k is the only requirement for a...
I am not a fluid Spanish speaker, or listener.
But I have taken several cave and cathedral tours given only in Spanish, and would not hesitate to do so again.
The paintings of Altamira and San Isidro are breath taking, in any language
Atapuerca might be too technical for us lay-people, but you...
Have a wonderful journey. Stay warm and dry. Give my regards to the cows. Take lots of photos.
Eat something new, everyday. Look for ripe chestnuts and a place to roast them. Be curious.
Buen Camino
So sorry for your leg/feet problems, I hope you get them cleared up soon.
But on the other hand, you are making me ache for two of my favorite Spanish cities, Burgos and Leon.
Whether on Camino, or as free-wheeling tourists, Beth and I always make a point to spend some time in each. Thank for...
You should not have any problem finding open places. In fact, I would estimate that there is a bar/restaurant or village/town/settlement about every 5 kilometers. Hope you have good weather. Buen Camino.
Alice, our first Camino was Sarria to Santiago, and it is still one of my favorite parts of the CF. Lots of beauty and interesting things in Galicia. And great people along the way.
We too trained on flat ground, and I was shocked when my 4.8 kph pace became 2.5 kph in the forests and hills...
Nice write up. I am sure you had a great experience.
Our second Camino (my wife and I) was in the Fall of 2016. It came right after my two failed ablation procedures to correct the atrial fibrillation in my then 68-year-old heart.
To complicate matters, my wife has a bad knee, so we were...
