I walked the Primitivo a few weeks ago , if you want to stay in certain albergues then you will have to book and pay the price
But for municipals I would not see a problem

I always check my rucksack in but make sure it goes as oversized luggage
The excuse is because of all the straps and dangly bits
Never failed yet ( touch wood ) and because it is in the oversized section it always arrives in the luggage hall first

at the door to save your place in the queue if the albergue is not yet open ?
