August Start

Perfect memento/gift in a presentation box. Engraving available, 25 character max.
Just wondering how many people start from SJPdP in August?
Just over 7000 last year. These are the monthly departures from SJPDP for recent years taken from the pilgrim office Facebook page. Or more accurately the ones recorded by the pilgrim office. There will be a few more like myself and a friend who did not register so actual numbers will be slightly higher

The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
The better question is do you want to? August is seriously hot. Last year at the end of August it was really hot. i think at the start you were looking at 40C level temps. After walking in those heat levels, I will probably never walk at that time of the year again. Once I got to Ponferrada it did get a bit cooler and wetter, but there were still some really hot muggy nights and even as late as October it was still (IMO) too hot.

In my experience, while still pretty warm, a few days before the end of the month is a good time to set off from SJPdP. I would avoid Saturday or Sunday though, which could put you in a busy wave.

Yes, I agree with Trecile. Manageable. Of course there will be days that are hotter than others. You are walking in Summer! I personally love the heat. Make an early start and finish around noon. There are plenty of places for water along the Way. Pace yourself and enjoy a lighter pack. Buen Camino for August! I will be walking Chemin du Puy.

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
I have done two long caminos in August and one in October. I found the ones in August easier but the scenery very dry and not as attractive as in October. I had more daylight hours to walk in August. I left at 630am. In October, i left in the dark at 8,am having to leave the albergue. It got light at 9am and was gloomy by 4pm. I finished the August caminos five days quicker than the October one because I didn't like walking in the rain. Nevertheless I enjoyed the challenge of the October one.
