LIVE from the Camino Camino home to home, 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024

I'm heading out again next week. Hooray !! I think I need to make a blimming *third* Live from the Camino thread, which is pretty weird. The [intermediary] Camino will be from Salamanca and then the Sanabrés to Santiago, then from there a partial reverse Camino, certainly much of the Meseta...

A call for regulation or permit on the Francés

The more recent news articles on the topic often suggest that the purpose of the money gathered would be to finance managing the consequences of the increase in the increasing number of tourists, pilgrims, and other visits to the city, so that cleaning up rubbish left by tourists, hiring...

A call for regulation or permit on the Francés

What I find is phrases like "En el caso de alojamientos básicos y hostales, la tasa a abonar sería de 50 céntimos". I guess at the time I was reading about it on Camino websites that were focusing on how it might impact pilgrims in particular in relation to non-pilgrims.

A call for regulation or permit on the Francés

In the proposal, that is the case.

A call for regulation or permit on the Francés

But it is discounted for pilgrims who sleep in Albergues in the city.

A call for regulation or permit on the Francés

Well that's one opinion of course, but then that depends what you mean by "medieval". And to know that the document has evolved over time is not to "misunderstand" it. The purpose of the document as a proof that one's penalty of minor excommunication had been lifted vanished during the Middle...

A call for regulation or permit on the Francés

Well, that's what I think too, which doesn't bode well for these calls to "regulate" the Camino, which would with similar outcome be nothing more than a straight pilgrim tax.

A call for regulation or permit on the Francés

Well right, but it still means that the fee has had zero deterrent effect so far, contrary to some earlier claims thereto from the part of those that instituted it.

A call for regulation or permit on the Francés

They are trialling it this year, with the result that they have more tourists this year during the period in question than last. https://the-european.eu/story-34918/venice-more-popular-than-ever-despite-e5-tourist-tax.html The controversial entry charge was introduced last month in the hope of...

A call for regulation or permit on the Francés

When having confessed was a prerequisite for a Compostela, if you got your document on a day without an indulgence then there wasn't one. Apart from that, someone going to the Cathedral and fulfilling the requirements on a day with an indulgence would obtain one, regardless of whether he...

A call for regulation or permit on the Francés

The 1963 model : Only the mass printed one. A 1785 Compostela : The oldest known Compostela certificate is dated 1321, but the document was likely introduced in the late 13th Century. The Archbishop of Santiago first ordered the printing of Compostela certificates in the beginning of the...

A call for regulation or permit on the Francés

One thing that is being done, and I've witnessed these incremental changes over the years, is that the route of the Francès in particular is changing over time to avoid some pueblos where the locals were annoyed (also in some cases for better pilgrim safety), but detouring into some those...
  13. JabbaPapa

A call for regulation or permit on the Francés

No, in origin and spirit, it's all about the religious pilgrimage to the Tomb of the Apostle, and the Compostela is a part of that religiosity rather than the centre of it. The Camino isn't about a piece of paper. That sounds illegal ; but even so, then people would just start walking 150K...

A call for regulation or permit on the Francés

The Catholic Church is not a for profit organisation. The fact that you can get your Credencial for €2 and your Compostela for free should be sufficient to disabuse you of that notion.

A call for regulation or permit on the Francés

Huh !! Here's something I didn't know !! A certificate is available for ANYONE who visits the Cathedral, for €3. https://www.tee-travel.com/blog/obtener-la-compostela-y-otros-certificados-peregrinos/ Certificado de visita La Catedral de Santiago, en su sede de la Archicofradía del Apóstol...

A call for regulation or permit on the Francés

hmmmmm seems I was mis-remembering. https://pelerinsdecompostelle.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/Credencial-del-Peregrino.pdf There's a €2 price limit (or was in 2016), and they request a contribution to the Pilgrim's Office.
  17. JabbaPapa

A call for regulation or permit on the Francés

No, it goes to the Pilgrim Office.

They do. It's the €2 donation that you pay for any Credencial.

A call for regulation or permit on the Francés

That was the old system. It would be utterly ruinous financially and especially organisationally in the 21st Century, given the MASSIVE increase in total pilgrim numbers, including of course the majority of pilgrims who make their way by motor transport.
