On the Camino: One Day at a Time, one Photo at a Time 11.0

Hornillos del Camino to Castrojeriz, Day 58, Via Podiensis/Camino Frances, 9th, June 2024. A cool, cloudy day today but great for walking and the countryside looked magnificent. The red of the poppies made the countryside look vibrant. A little mud on the way today after a very big rain, hail...

On the Camino: One Day at a Time, one Photo at a Time 11.0

Burgos to Hornillos del Camino, Day 57, Via Podiensis/Camino Frances, 8th, June, 2024. A big thunderstorm last evening in Burgos with some rain but we had a dry mainly sunny walk today. This evening we have just had a huge thunderstorm, with hail and torrential rain in Hornillos! Burgos...

    Camino by Coach

...for pilgrims walking, and they are full yet. Therefore I am angry when I read people who are looking for sharing a taxi from Burgos to Hornillos, despite the fact that almost no beds remain there... Another misunderstanding from me is the expression "qualifying for a Compostela". IMHO, you...

A call for regulation or permit on the Francés

I completely agree it's impossible to say anything definitive without extensive research on the terrain. My knowledge of the situation is based on the occasional browsing of this forum and my last CF which was may-june 2022. I ran into one continuous cludge of pilgrims out of Portomarin (I...

A call for regulation or permit on the Francés

...weeks of the pilgrimage season and they concern mainly the Roncesvalles-Pamplona section and some small villages like Hontanas (or is it Hornillos) later on. The complaints of the second kind appear mainly for the section Sarría to Santiago. Is there actually a shortage of beds in Galicia -...

From just before Burgos - 47 friggin kms to find a bed!!!

Out of curiosity, I looked up Hornillos del Camino, a focal point here . Poor little Hornillos. Unless I did not look carefully enough, it is a village of some 54 inhabitants (2023 - ES Wikipedia) or still 70 inhabitants in 2004 according to a census, with five establishments for...

From just before Burgos - 47 friggin kms to find a bed!!!

I have no idea where you are from but if I were to arrive in your town/city/village say one afternoon and I found no accommodation for that night, would it be alright for me to blame ‘the authorities’??? And which ‘authorities’ would that be? I hope you are rested now. Buen camino 🙂

    Meseta

Where would you suggest to walk to until you get a bus or train on to Leon...I am short of time and it will be very hot when I go (July) but I would like to have at least a taste of the Meseta

From just before Burgos - 47 friggin kms to find a bed!!!

...Given most people stop in Burgos, either just overnight or for a rest day, it also creates affects the day after, especially as Hornillos is a nice 20km from Burgos which is doable for most pilgrims - but Hontanas at over 30km from Burgos is a stretch for many. Unlike Leon, another popular...

From just before Burgos - 47 friggin kms to find a bed!!!

You are tired and have overcome a personal challenge, but please don't spoil your achievement by overplaying your hand! You are correct that personal responsibility is the default. Coping with uncertainty and managing some discomfort are part of the experience of camino, though there are...

From just before Burgos - 47 friggin kms to find a bed!!!

...esp amongst non-Spanish speakers, getting a taxi forwards or backwards would have been welcome by the many people scratching their heads in Hornillos del Camino, wondering what to do. Perhaps info boards in Burgos clearly stating that the next free beds were in Hontanos etc - this was a...

Pacemaker Implant Surgery Tomorrow. A New Phase for Future Caminos.

...early Feb and will be walking a stage of the Camino in 4 weeks time. We were persuaded to accompany some friends last year on the leg from Hornillos to Leon and fell in love with it, so are returning to start from the beginning and walk to Logrono. We aim to complete it in stages over the...

Theft of charity box Casa del Sol a Sol

Last night we stayed in Casa del Sol a Sol in Hornillos del Camino. The owner could not have been more accommodating and told us that the front door is open 24 hours a day. When we came down for breakfast this morning he told us that someone had stolen a charity tin from the dining/lounge area...

Message from the Roncesvalles albergue - a difficult day.

Another update - hornillos was very busy and multiple people couldn’t find any beds and were sent onwards. The next stop down also didn’t have beds so I don’t know where they ended up finding spaces. After running to get a bed today I’ve actually made the decision to hike and travel tomorrow...

    Stomach Bug on Meseta

Interesting! We were in Hontanas September 28, 2018, Carrion Sept. 29, and then 5 of 6 got sick and barely made it to Ledigos. We were never able to pinpoint what the problem could have been, but there's a lot of smoke for there to be no fire there (IMO). Feel better!

    Stomach Bug on Meseta

I was very sick in Belorado. Thought it was food poisoning but now think it’s a bug as taking a while to recover. Have met about 15 others who have had similar, from Santa Domingo to Hornillos where I am now - and heard of many others.

    Stomach Bug on Meseta

It comes and goes in that area of the Meseta, I seen it mentioned too many times over the years by various newbies to dismiss it as coincidence or posters attributing their ill health to something they have heard before about an area.
