Making friends when starting the Camino later

Burgos is a great place to start! Lovely city. I can only get ~2 weeks at a time, and I've done Leon-Santiago (mostly) and Burgos-Leon (then on to Villafranca). I'm repeating Leon-Santiago starting Friday. Don't worry about missing the Pyrenees. The section after Leon, until Sarria, has amazing...

    permethrin, which/where to buy UK

I actually just got one of these - it arrived in 2 days from Amazon. I've given my backpack a thorough spray, and it's now drying outside. No obvious problems. The bottle has a screw cap, and comes with a spray nozzle that you switch to for using it, then you can screw cap it properly for...

Why do I get the impression this isn't the only time she's made you do that ?!!

LIVE from the Camino Current conditions on the Frances

It'd be great to meet anyone from the forums! I'm starting from Leon on 26 April, so it's just possible I might meet some of you. I can be recognised from my avatar (it's more up to date than any of my ID cards).

    Latest Camino Fad .

That cow's probably had the Castilian garlic soup... And doesn't need a balloon, just a nozzle to direct the thrust!

Bikini or not bikini, right now, Frances route

"We can certainly hope so!" Is the answer with my Benny Hill hat on... What I actually meant to add, was that this year I'm swapping actual swimming shorts for an extra pair of synthetic hiking shorts, which are compact and lightweight (steady...) and will dry at least as quickly. Dual use tops...

Bikini or not bikini, right now, Frances route

In September and May, I've had 2 weeks on the Frances and always found at least one place with an open pool, outdoors (and always at least one pool closed for no particular reason). Chilly in May, but I would have been sad if I didn't have shorts for swimming. In April, many places may not be...

    Desktop Computer Availability in Albergues

I write sci-fi stories when I have time, and last year I brought a small (1 kg / 2lbs) netbook for this, and it was also quite useful for general computer things as well. It's 15 years old, and cheap, and I didn't mind carrying it, but I was surprised I couldn't find anything more recent and...

    April Fool

I wonder if they chose the name deliberately so their acronym was "I FEAR"

Food to bring to Spanish friend from US

I had a student from the US who made very nice brownies for us - using US flour which he claimed was different from that available in the UK. I don't know if that's factually true, or whether your friends would want to use it in a recipe assuming it is true. I know for sure that US chocolate...

    Niggling hates (dislikes) on Camino

I'm pretty sure I snore, sometimes, but I'm never awake to enjoy it. I thought of this while I was semi-asleep on the train today, and noticed a gentle, soft purring sound, almost musical in quality, which sadly abated with a sort of "oink" whenever I stirred. Anyway, something I don't like...

    Show me your backpack!

You are in luck, because the time zone in Spain will oblige you to sleep in! Dawn in April is at about 8am, civil time (because Spain is strangely on Central European time). And solar noon is, perhaps surprisingly, at about 2:30 in the afternoon. I found this second fact took some getting used...

    Is this Camino clothing heresy?

Isn't there a risk people might think you've escaped from some type of institution?

Camino Newbie - Lots of Advice needed and appreciated

Good luck Katrina! Oddly enough, I timed my first two weeks on Camino for my 40th birthday too - in part to avoid the risk of a surprise party! One bit of advice. I tried to do Leon to Santiago in 13 days. A mistake, due to poor planning of stage lengths on my part. Unfortunately, because I...

    Lightning

I've had a good chuckle at this thread! To be struck by lightning is the iconic "unlikely event", and therefore I can only think of comic replies. But I will suppress the urge to post a follow-up thread, such as > "Lightning: pros and cons of the traditional tinfoil hat versus the modern...

How do you carry the important stuff?

On my first camino, I had just had a new front door installed, and I was acutely aware that if I lost my keys I would be in deep trouble. Fortunately my Osprey backpack has a key loop in the inside pocket, and I had one more key in my small pack with other valuables, so it was OK. But definitely...

Where do you shop? [in the UK]

Sports Direct was surprisingly good - wide selection, inexpensive, and no problems with them - for synthetic tops and shorts, and I also got my Merrell Ventilator shoes there. This is in Cambridge, where there are also some dedicated outdoor shops, but they are outrageously overpriced. (I saw a...

What I lost on the Camino

I lost some clothes pins and one sock, but I reckon it was somebody else's doing! Also: one sock! Maybe on future packing lists, it should not be socks (3 pairs), but socks (7).
