Thanks for replying @Anniesantiago this for for setting up an account on the Renfe website before buying a ticket. I have to select one of three options above but don't really understand why the 2 lower tiers are there and if there's any reason why I should choose one of them.
I'm just looking at booking a rail ticket from Madrid and registering on the Renfe website gives 3 options for 'membership' seems to be that the top tier is free and has several benefits over the lower tiers. Am I missing something, looks like there's no reason to sign up with the lower tiers ...
Agree, the Guardia Civil might be able to check the national database of tourists (details here). Don't know if Portugal have a similar system, but I'm sure police will be used to dealing with queries like this.

Hi everyone, I arrive at Bilbao airport from UK at around 6.25pm on 2nd October and had hoped to make it up to Bayonne the same night, but I'm struggling to find options that work.
Plan was to overnight in Bayonne and get a morning train to SJPP for an early start.
