    Train Derailment at Santiago

We were heartbroken to learn of this news yesterday. Our deepest sympathies to all those involved in this horrible tragedy. May everyone get through this as best they can, and may peace eventually find its way into everyone's hearts and souls.

Videos by 10- and 8-year old hikers of the Camino Frances

We recently returned from the Camino Frances; my daughters and I walked from SJPP to Fisterra. Each of my kids took a ton of photos and each made a video compilation of her travels. I've posted their videos on our website -- here's the direct link: http://www.girlsontheway.com/2013/05/al ...

    Girls on the Way

Hi Kiwi, Thanks for following our journey! I've had comments and hits for the past few days, and I can open my blog through Google, so I'm not sure what the problem is. Let me know if you keep having trouble. http://www.girlsontheway.com Trish

    Ipad on the Camino

I've been using an iPad mini and I love it! It's small, light, and easily fits in a fanny pack. I blog, email, carry a Spanish dictionary, access maps, the Internet, etc. Free WiFi is almost everywhere so I do not use a 3G or 4G network (so therefore I have no roaming charges).

    How is San Bol?

We stayed in San Bol last night and loved it. A friendly Spanish hospiteralo met us at the door. Peaceful setting, cozy albergue, wonderful communal dinner. Cost is five Euros or twelve if you want the communal dinner (you may cook your own food if you like, the communal dinner is an option...

A pilgrim has died on the Camino near Roncesvalles - March 2013

backpack45, great post. Hypothermia is more of a danger in cool rain, in my opinion, than it is in snow, because people don't realize the danger and they might allow themselves to become drenched in the rain while wearing jeans and sweatshirts, etc. Add a stiff wind to that equation and...

A pilgrim has died on the Camino near Roncesvalles - March 2013

Agreed, though I personally don't know many hikers who are hiking for an adrenaline rush or to prove their toughness. They, like my daughters and I, hike mountains in all temps because they/we enjoy nature in all Her glory and wildness. That being said, one needs to be ego-less and without...

A pilgrim has died on the Camino near Roncesvalles - March 2013

Thanks for sharing your story, McVet. I'd like to use it to make an important point for those might not know the following - When it comes to hiking, "cotton kills." Meaning, leave all your cotton and denim clothing at home and pack only wicking base layers (wool or synthetic clothing)...

What is the one Albergue that you would say not to miss

Staying in Ventosa's San Saturnino tonight and it is wonderful! Lovely decor, large and beautiful patio with washing and drying area, beautiful rooms, and a light smell of incense wafting throughout. Also has a large, well-equipped kitchen. Two thumbs up!

A pilgrim has died on the Camino near Roncesvalles - March 2013

Very sad. Did he step through deep snow, not realizing there was a sharp drop-off ahead? Was he caught in a small avalanche? Or was he hypothermic and no longer aware of what he was doing? I respectfully disagree about the comment regarding groups, though. I've seen smart people switch into...

What is the one Albergue that you would say not to miss

Stayed in Casa de la Abuela in Los Arcos two nights ago and loved it! Cozy, comfy beds, large and clean showers, laundry for only fifty Euro Cents and breakfast. Family run. Our favorite on the Camino thus far.

IMPORTANT: Advice for pilgrims setting off APRIL 2013

Re: IMPORTANT: Advice for pilgrims setting off in March 2013 Hi folks, I have photos of SJPP, Valcarlos, and Roncesvalles on my blog - http://www.girlsontheway.com. If you have limited time, then start at Pamplona. If you have ample time and don't mind the snow, then start at SJPP. Yes, it's...

LIVE from the Camino My daughters and I leave today for SJPP

Thank you, everyone! We are now in Roncesvalles. Snow everywhere -- feels like we never left home. For those who want to do the Napoleon Route soon...don't count on it. Yesterday, the mountain probably received another 1/3 meter of snow. Valcarlos is lovely, though, and the walk was...

IMPORTANT: Advice for pilgrims setting off APRIL 2013

Re: IMPORTANT: Advice for pilgrims setting off in March 2013 Excellent It'll feel like home. We've been training for months in negative Fahrenheit temps on our local mountains (1200 m plus). Last year, my 9 yr old became the youngest person to hike all 48 of our local 1300 m plus...

    Class of 2013

We are good to go -- leaving Sunday night from Boston and taking a few days to travel to SJPP. Will start our camino from SJPP the morning of March 13th! We're very happy as we've raised close to $10,000 for Global Fund for Women and GirlVentures, two nonprofits that promote the well-being and...
