2 week split Camino Frances with the family - April 2019

Hi Beeks! I've been fortunate enough to do a solo and family trip on the Frances. They were both wonderful and different. I met an amazingly diverse crowd of people both times. Go with the family ;-) If you are interested I shared our journey in this post, your kids might enjoy seeing pictures...

Dry Feet ... Is it possible?

It's not possible ;-) Remember that anything that keeps ALL water out will also keep ALL moisture in = blisters!!! Andrew Skurka, one time National Geographic adventurer of the year explains well in this post: https://andrewskurka.com/2012/why-waterproof-shoes-will-not-keep-your-feet-dry/ As...

    Walking Down Hills

Make it into switchbacks when possible or "zigzags" as some call it! On a day with lots of downs I resort to a little jog sometimes to switch it up.

Why multiple times on the CF?

I walked my first solo and my second with my family. Totally different experiences but both amazing.

Weather next week... should I change my plans?

Don't look too much at the extended forecasts!!!! Remember that it is based on algorithms for likely conditions in that time of year and this far out it does not necessarily hold true. Both times I hiked the weather called for odd things the first day in the mountains and everything worked out...

    Too old?

Last fall my daughters and I walked off and on for 3 days with a nice gentleman from Whales who was 84 and planning a 30 day camino....he made it ;-) Go for it - be kind with yourself and rest and skip where needed. Buen Camino!

Suggestions for a 14 day Camino Frances

30-40km a day is definitely possible! Last fall with my 2 girls we were regularly seeing any of a dozen people who were hiking those distances, as we were. Buen Camino, enjoy your journey!

    Sarria scams

"No es no" is the phrase (like someone else said) - stated directly with eye contact but not yelling or condescending - I've used it more than one time on the camino and every time it has worked well ;-)

    Camino frances on october

Both times I walked in October and the weather was very nice both times (although TOO DRY last year with the drought in Spain). No snow, not much rain. Trail running shoes were fine here. Buen Camino!

    Need help with shoe debate

I say go with what you think is right and not what your husband thinks is right for you :-) Spoken from a woman who loves her husband and often tells him what to wear hiking ;)

    Planning Advanced Albergue Reservations

We didn't pre-book and we were traveling as a party of 3 in Sept and Oct (me and my 2 daughters). We really liked being able to stop when we were ready for the day, some days this meant further than we might have made a reservation and other days before! Once of twice we had to walk to a...

4 weeks to walk the Camino...

I don't think it is 'braggadocio' to say what works for you :-) Helping all pilgrims means some really can and want to do the camino at a quicker pace. It takes all different types of pilgrims to give advice :-) Just as there is no minimum speed on walking, there is no maximum speed on walking...

    Pamplona during San Fermin

If anyone is worried about getting stuck in festivals in the cities of Spain, don't walk the camino :-) In all seriousness the two times I have walked I have experienced large festivals in Pamplona, Burgos, and Leon. I must have good unintentional timing. I didn't find it to be a problem, just...

    Weather in October

Both trips I walked in October and thought it was spectacular :-) Buen Camino!

Roncesvalles Beds - How was it in 2017?

I had problems reserving Ronscavalles online; however, I simply sent them an email and they sent a paypal receipt direct to me for payment within a few days. Just make sure to translate your email into Spanish :-)

Frances in October with 2 daughters

October this year was COLD mornings and VERY WARM-DRY afternoons for most of the journey (with the exception of our last 3 days from Santiago to Fisterra where we actually saw some rain!). It was an unusual year though for Spain. It never got to the point of really being too hot except for one...

Coming home: Help for the heartbroken

You're not alone. If there is one thing that I think we can do to help is go through simplifying whatever \aspects of your life REALLY are just too much. One of the amazing aspects of any walking journey is that your choices are so small and manageable each day. Back in 'the real world' the...
