Making the first day of Norte a bit easier

I found the descent in to Pasai quite tough on my knees. We had gotten a bus to Irún that morning from Bilbao so we’re late starting. Once we got to Pasai, we got the boat across to the other side. There was a taxi rank with a phone and we got picked up and taken to San Sebastián.

Remember rugby is on 11-12 in Bilbao/Portugalete

I've just had a look at the central Bilbao hostel that I stayed in on Saturday night (BCool) where I paid 22 Euro for the night. For this Saturday during the rugby a bed in a dormitory is 148 Euro! Maybe get out to the Pilgrim's hostel in Pobena if you can't get a bed in Bilbao. It's an easy bus...

Many pilgrims at the moment, why?

I’ve just finished a stretch of the Camino Del Norte from Bilbao to Llanes. The only place where we ran into a wave of pilgrims was Santillana but it was a Sunday night. The Convento Albergue filled up quickly and then the municipal so by 6pm no albergue beds left. We then booked private...

    Class of 2018

I'm heading to Bilbao on Sunday to do a section of the Camino del Norte. In 2016 I did the Frances from SJPP to SdC and then last year the Portuguese from Coimbra to SdC. This is a new experience then, not finishing in SdC but I hope to get to Llanes at least in the 11 days that I have plus a...

Help needed with the first stages of Camino Portugues

We couldn’t get into Casa Fernanda. We walked on to Casa de Valinhas which was a lovely treat. It’s about another 1.5km from Casa Fernanda.

Walking Porto to Santiago and have a few days ahead of that

I started atCoimbra which took me 5 days to get to Porto - Mealhada, Agueda, Albergaria de Nova, San Joao then Vila Nova de Gaia and then Matasinhos. I had spent a few days in Porto before going down to Coimbra. I loved the quietness and solitude before arriving in Porto. It got fairly busy...

    Single rooms

I've just finished the Portuguese from Coimbra to Santiago. I stayed in a mix of hostels, some with private rooms, albergues and Casa rurales. I usually did my research on booking dot com and Wise Pilgrim. Then I called them or emailed them directly and their prices were often cheaper. I only...

Coming back to complete or start again?

Hi Bonnie! Great to see you're thinking of going back again! I think starting from Leon would be a good idea. It's very different terrain especially after Astorga and such a beautiful Walk into Galicia. Then you have time to go to Finisterre and Muxia at the end. Best of luck!

    Class of 2017

I walked the Frances in September/October this year from SJPP to SDC (still can't quite believe I did it!) and I seem to have inspired some friends to start thinking of doing something similar. One has done Sarria to SdC so we are hoping to do Porto to Santiago in May.

    knitting finding a yarn shop

I found sock yarn and bamboo dpns in Tiger shop in Burgos so got cracking in some socks! I am now in SdC and on Rua Nova there are two yarn shops! I spied some women lacemaking in one of them last night!

    Shoes for the wider feet

I have wide feet and am walking in Meindl shoes. Only one blister so far (on day 31 from SJPP). They are very comfy and plenty of room.

    No room in the albergues!

I'm at Villatuerta just outside Estella. I have been booking albergues one night ahead because it is really busy. Lots of completo signs yesterday in Puente la Reina. I booked using http://alberguescaminonavarra.com That will get me to Logrono and I'll see from there.

Three week old new albergue in Zubiri

Thanks for this. Roncesvalles was turning people away last evening as it was full. so I emailed Anna at Segundo Etapa and booked a bed there. The municipal albuergue was full at 5 I heard. Anyway this place is lovely - quiet, lots of hot water, clothes washed and pegged out. And she booked me a...

I bought some this morning from the shop down the hill from the Pilgrims Office. A good range and Nadia who works there explained some top tips for using them.

Also arrived in Paris with no baggage...

We shared a lovely train ride, picking up another Aussie along the way. I had accommodation booked so we parted ways in the way into town. Alice and her mum (and their bags) were heading to the Pilgrims Office.
