    A Winter Camino

Lucky for you that your emergencies aren't like mine (no one I know has emergencies like mine) ... there was a time wherein I thought that the person up there hated me and simply ran out of thunderbolts (or meteors) ... what sustained me ages ago was hot oatmeal, Jamon Serrano, and cheese galore...

My passport number is judged as being invalid

This post originally concerned me somewhat because my passport has nine digits ONLY ... no letters ... hmmmm ...

true pilgrims? do you mean traditional pilgrims?

When is a pilgrim not a pilgrim

Hi Williamlitig, for some odd reason or another, I can't seem to quote your posting ... so I cut and pasted it down below: "Same question different answer. Working as a hospitalero I have been asked for shelter by Freegans and vagabonds living on the generosity of others. Money is evil or not...

    A good idea . . . or not

I use a polyester fleece liner on the inside and a shell (of unknown material) on the outside. my sleeping bags are cheap and have a temperature rating that leaves much to be desired ... true, the fleece liner is heavy and bulky but - it gets the job done ...

    A Winter Camino

=================== Hi Trish, Those immersion coil take-practically-forever-to-boil thingies don't work too well without electricity (what if you want soup in the middle of nowhere?) ... would a propane stove be within your weight limit? As for a one season bag, what I did (more than once...

    Missing phone

I've never lost a modern phone or smartphone but aren't the newer locked phones able to receive calls? ... I hope the lost phone didn't contain pictures ... it's always better to have pictures on a separate device and copy them onto something else (flashdrive?) or upload them/ email them to...

When is a pilgrim not a pilgrim

It's a matter between the individual and God ... sometimes God whispers, and sometimes there has to be the proverbial "handwriting on the wall" ... sometimes, people are so deaf and blind that they are unaware that God is indeed speaking thru them (He often speaks thru other people/events) ...

Camino etiquette: learn a lesson from the rambling hiker

I agree, it's sad that certain people take offense at anything said online (or even offline - in real life). As for one's choice in hiking gear ... whatever works:cool: ... whatever fits his/her budget ... why should it even be mentioned (even though old stuff weighs more than modern stuff)

Pulpo is octopus? not my thing either ...

Smartphone vs. camera - how to carry the camera?

Its not the camera, it's the photographer ... I'd rather buy the most cost effective camera and load up on micro SD cards and take tons of pics/vids and choose the best ... Those Dollar store pill cases (the Sun-Mon-Tues-Wed-Thurs-Fri-Sat types?) make excellent micro SD storage cases. One can...

    Urgent footwear question

Found that long distance walking with shoes that are one size up and shoes that are somewhat wider than your usual width helps a bit (at least in my case). ankle boots are supposed to help give ankle support (unsure if they really do- I have no point of comparison) ... be sure to lace them up...

Two pilgrims rescued on the Primitivo

Did some research on that route and yes, you are right ... all my research so far has been on the Camino Frances. I'm still saving up to go on my trip. My nephews were scared of mountain fog when they visited us here the first time. Fog can be spooky to city dwellers.

    Some fun but harmless stereotyping

Little old ladies? the "bottle neckers"? yup, that's me too - but I don't have an excuse. I just walk slow ... and "hog" the trail with my bulky pack ... LOL

    Cost

"Corridor inflation" - I like the term. and I can confirm that it exists in other parts of the world (not only within the tourist industry) ... most ordinary people don't feel the urge to go shop around for bargains ... they think it's a waste of time ... or maybe they're just too tired at the...

No beds on the last 100km into Santiago

With regards to a Hammock ... I don't mean to be a kill-joy, but ask first if the hammock is permitted ... there are some National parks in the world which don't allow it (certain districts and municipalities have different rules) ... it causes tree damage (its damages the bark) ... we don't use...

Looking for advice - pack weight

slow down. why 25-35Km? How are your shoes? Had issues with my upper foot last week when I didn't lace up my shoes properly. Do you have multi mineral tablets? mineral intake is often overlooked. but those lovely and tasty European gourmet cheeses should solve that (Cheese in America is all...

    Sharing gear as a couple

Oh, what I meant to say was ... look at the SIZE of women's handbags - not what's in them (that would be an invasion of privacy-4th Amendment?) ... I get most of my observations from the military ... and certain comedians - there is truth in comedy ...

    Sharing gear as a couple

Hiking / walking cart? Normally, it's the woman who doesn't bring stuff - the guy usually brings everything but the kitchen sink. Proof? look at most women's handbags. Travelling as a couple is advantageous as one person can guard the stuff while the other shops around. the ideal travel number...
