I'm a slow walker with physical challenges.
I walked from A Guarda to SJC in 2018 in 12 days. Not a drop of rain untl SJC. Be sure to take rest days.
Buen Camino
I stayed at a private albergue in Viladesuso, on the highway about 16 km north of A Guarda and 14km from Baiona. It has private rooms with shared bath and a dorm. Also a nice deck overlooking the ocean. Comfortable mattresses!
What is your criteria for "inexpensive." Will you be travelling alone or sharing a room?
I've begun doing research on the Norte from Gijon. In terms of distance, it appears that it's possible to keep the distance of stages under 15km, except for a few stages after Ribadeo. From Walls of Nalon...
I walked the Aragones starting April 21, 2023 from Canfranc Station. The first day it rained heavily all morning. I never had another drop of rain until I was past Logrono. Last year, another poster said there was snow at the beginning of April. It was all gone by the time I arrived.
The...
I stayed in Bruselas. Nice, modern, clean, room, good bed, great shower. Breakfast was included. When I told the manager that I would be leaving before breakfast, he had the kitchen make a snack bag (sandwich, banana, and cookies) which I picked up at the bar before going to bed. I'm not sure...
According to Rome to Rio, Jimenez Movilidad (local bus) has 5 trips a day. Took their bus from Villafranca Montes to Burgos. If you use them, make sure you have a reservation. The bus was full and some pilgrims without reservations were denied boarding.
This quote from Bill Bryson in "A walk in the woods" says it all...
“Distance changes utterly when you take the world by foot…Life takes on a neat simplicity too. Time ceases to have any meaning…All that is required of you is a willingness to trudge…you exist in a kind of mobile zen mode, your...
If you've got so much time to plan, and getting to Madrid from Australia is as easy as Paris, why not fly to Madrid. Train from Atocha in Madrid via Zaragosa is super easy - about 6 hours. Last spring there were 2 trains a day. As someone mentioned, it leaves you off at Canfranc Station. A local...
I didn't do the Camino Portuges in Portugal, but started in A Guarda. The Way between A Guarda and Baiona is an easy walk and is beautiful. It's about 2/3 walking on the road, but the ocean is always on your left. Because of hip issues, I didn't take the rocky trail over the ridge from Mougas...
Lianna, I had a similar experience. In April there were very few pilgrims, and no native English speakers, except in a cafe in Canfranc (and they weren't pilgrims). My Spanish improved immensely. There's no other choice but to practice your Spanish.
Keep on loving it! Buen Camino.
I'm finding this thread very interesting. I walked the Aragones last April and except for the variants to the Javier Castle and Lumbier, was unaware of the route north of Yesa.
I walked Foz de Lumbier early on a Sunday morning., and stayed at the hotel in Lumbier...very nice. The Foz is...
Thanks Vacajoe. If I remember correctly, there aren't any services between Arress and Artieda...I guess whichever way you go. It's a beautiful walk, but as you say very quiet. I don't think I saw one car, except off in the distance on the major highway. It was like having the whole valley all to...
How about 3 Caminos: the Aragones, Frances and Invierno? You get to walk a big chunk of the Frances, and experience some new places. This year, I had plans to walk the Aragones to Punta de la Reina, get on the Frances to Ponferrada, and then take the Invierno into SdC. It would have been a...
There's a bus that runs from Baiona to Vigo. When I walked, I took the first bus of the day to A Ramallosa which cut 4-5 km off the day. I'm not sure what route it takes after A Ramallosa. By the way, there's nothing open in Ramallosa at 7:00 am. Playa Americana is the closest cup of coffee at 8.
