How long and steep are the downhills going from St Jean to Roncesvalles?

Another strategy is to walk the beautiful Valcarlos route from SJPdP to Roncesvalles. Steep uphill at the end, but no steep downhills. Gorgeous scenery.

All the ways that the movie “The Way” was spot on...

My first CF was either before the movie 'The Way' was released or at least it was little known. So my Camino experience was before I saw the movie. Although I enjoyed it, the movie seemed very unlike anything that I had experienced.

    Which part should I skip?

If you are not concerned about a Compostella you can skip the crowds, lineups and aggravation of the last 100K.

Scientific Proof That Bag Rustling is Painful

I appreciate your comments. However, whatever the 'waterproof' state of a pack, when covered with the 'waterproof' pack cover and worn under a poncho it seems to stay dry.

Scientific Proof That Bag Rustling is Painful

    My pack is waterproof.

Scientific Proof That Bag Rustling is Painful

Any good pack should be at least water repellant. The waterproof pack cover should eliminate any need for the extra weight of a waterproof liner.

Scientific Proof That Bag Rustling is Painful

The rustle my bag makes, when I walk, is a meditative mantra that carries me along. It translates to the words I need. As far as morning noise, I prep the night before so everything I need sits loose on top and what I don't need gets carried to the communal area to be packed.

Toilet tissue on or by the trail

That and the litter are disgusting and have often been commented on. Walking in the dark with a headlamp the white toilet paper does help mark the sides of the trail though.

Finished a few days ago... am I the only one who

The last 100k is the part to skip - if you are not concerned about the certificate.

Please help my girly soft feet man up

Called NOK in other places. It is supposed to be good for conditioning your feet. This sounds like a boot issue to me.

    Top bunk, bottom bunk?

When booking into an albergue with my wife, when bunks were assigned, we would often be assigned a set of beds bunked; by default I was the upper. I don't really like the bunk above especially when over a stranger - somehow you feel like an intruder on their space. You try to find default...

    Training? Absolutely necessary?

Central Spain is dry. The fine dust that stirs as you walk plugs the mesh of the fine Gore-tex membrane and it continues to become even less effective.

    Training? Absolutely necessary?

I have done a Camino Frances with Gore-tex and without Gore-tex. With Gore-tex your feet will be hotter and more prone to blisters on 90% of the days which are dry and get wet eventually anyway on wet days. Non Gore-tex boots get wetter faster - but also dry faster.

Too cold to walk in October? Too deserted for a woman alone?

My wife and I finished our first Camino at the end of October. It is a great time of year with cool nights in the albergues and days very comfortable for walking. Grapes are ripe on the vine and nuts on the trees. You may find people giving away fruit to pilgrims along the trail. We just missed...

    Fatigue Question

I remember a 'Monday Morning' disease from Psych 101. Work horses rested Sundays but kept on the same ration of oats were stiff, cramping, sweating unwilling to move. It can be tough to get going after a day of rest. Humans also experience this at least to some extent.

    Jews on the Camino

My reading leads me to believe that, ironically, Ya'qob (Hebrew), Iago (Spanish), James (English) would have believed himself to be a Jewish follower of a Jewish messiah.

Necessary to buy new John Brierley guide?

An 'experienced' Brierley guide almost carries itself. My 2011 worked fine in 2013. Even worked well in bright sunlight and never needed charging!

    Worried about walking alone

There are risks in anything that we do. Anything. Once you accept that, you will realize that the Camino is comparatively safe - certainly safer than walking around in any US city. Traveling alone is certainly less safe and always has been, but it is incredibly easy to hook up with some...

LIVE from the Camino Camino Frances - new info?

Yes, Icacos, it is a pilgrimage not a 'Club Med' vacation. I truly think that the more basic the experience the more you get out of it. I sure did appreciate a separate room and toilet from time to time though

LIVE from the Camino Camino Frances - new info?

I think that we need to stop rating albergues. It is enough of a gift that volunteers and donors put in their hours to offer us a smile, a roof and a welcome bed at almost no cost.
