10 reasons to use trekking poles

You can add to that list hunting implement. A fellow hiker used his pole to kill a wounded turkey he encountered out on the Appalachian Trail. From his report, the turkey was delicious.

10 reasons to use trekking poles

On the Appalachian Trail, I was in the minority in my pole-less hiking. I fully appreciate the benefit, but I think trekking poles are annoying and not for me. I did the whole AT ME/GA with no poles. I did find an old metal broom handle that I used as a trekking staff for about 70 miles in...

Those straps can be a killer. Lemme tell yah!

10 reasons to use trekking poles

Trekking poles add weight, which means one will have to expend more energy while using them. Trekking poles scar the trail. Along some trails I have seen scratches on rocks and gouges on the trail. Trekking poles are often misused. If you lack proper technique, you will just be wasting energy...

    Please review my packing list

If it's really buggy I'll use deet on clothing and apply tea tree oil or something all natural to my skin/face. The all natural stuff does work, but usually not as long as deet. A bug net might be worth the trouble too, although I have met people who became nauseous from bug nets treated with...

    Eso sí, ¿qué es? (S-O-C-K-S)

Darn Tough Socks are great. Unconditional Lifetime guarantee. I have had socks replaced at stores that sold Darn Tough Socks, because of the unconditional lifetime guarantee.

10 reasons to use trekking poles

Here is a good little article about the Pros AND Cons of trekking sticks: http://www.slackpacker.com/trekking-poles.html

10 reasons to use trekking poles

I appreciate your sentiments. However, if you need to refer to "some article" that you recall "made sense" as opposed to having a cogent explanation of why they are useful, perhaps they are not as useful as you think. They are definitely great for some people (older people with joint issues...

10 reasons to use trekking poles

Ludd was more an opponent of technology. My position is that trekking poles are over marketed and over hyped. If you need tekking sticks, you can go make some using a tree or branch.

10 reasons to use trekking poles

I can see that you have "drunk the cool aid" with regard to trekking poles. The various manufacturers of trekking sticks will be well served by your zeal. People who have knee trouble can benefit tremendously from the additional support. They certainly are useful for some people. I found...

10 reasons to use trekking poles

It is totally a matter of taste and comfort. I tend to be consumerist in my skepticism for products. I wonder how much of trekking poles is a fad and based on opinions developed by trekking pole manufacturers! :)

    What shampoo/soap to bring

While thru hiking the Appalachian Trail, I saw DOZENS of bottles of Coleman Soap Suds left behind by people cutting weight. I don't know if that correlates to it being a bad product, but it seemed like ALOT of people who bought it didn't mind ditching it. I use Dr Bonners.

    Dr Bonners. Mild hemp soap.

10 reasons to use trekking poles

I am one of a minority of people who will not use trekking poles until I physically need them. I quite frankly think trekking poles are over used and usually un-nesseary unless an individual has a physical problem. They are great if you have a knee problem.

    Please review my packing list

Carabiners can be VERY handy if a shoulder strap breaks. I had a strap break on the Appalachian Trail. I used a carabiner to jerry rig my pack and hiked about 50 miles with it. Can be handy. Also can be used to hang wet clothing on.

    Please review my packing list

Good list. I would see if you can ditch the fanny pack. Can you carry things in pants pockets, hang from shoulder straps of pack or keep in hip belt pockets of pack? I am not familiar with your backpack so don't know what hip belt pouches are like. I think you could drop either the sandals or...

30 Liter Pack - Camino Portuguese - My Gear List

There are a number of apps/software that can allow someone to circumvent censorship. Look up VPN and use of a proxy. That's beyond the scope of my post.

I hope the text version of the list I pecked out is more succinct and has sufficient "production values". :) Bom Caminho!
