Confused about clothes for April/May on Camino Frances

In 2013 April 17-May 17 Camino Frances we had snow going over the mountains from SJPDP. We had snow again just before Burgos. Wind on the meseta was hypothermic. I always take a toque and light gloves. Several layers but not doubles of each layer as the weight gets excessive. Do take extra pairs...

    Second guessing on rain gear

Ponchos are the most used rain gear I have seen on the Camino Frances. Mine at 380g is entirely adequate.

    Carry-on Size

My 35 L and my son's 40L had no trouble as carry on even with the ever extremely anal Ryanair.

Mid weight fleece OR wind jacket ... Or both?

Of course a poncho for those wet days. And a small knit cap -we call them toques in Canada - is indispensable on those colder days and walking before the sun is up.

how long does it take to cover the average 25k per day?

There is a magic, though, to walking in the morning coolness with the stars retreating and the sun not yet risen; following your headlamp into a beautiful sunrise.

Do you want to go lightweight? If so....

Less is best. The lightest lightest load I ran into was a woman with just what she had on. It seemed to work.

    Essential items to leave behind?

Less is best. Have you considered starting with a much smaller pack? Really a 30-35 l. is adequate. Excess gear problem solved.

To headlamp, or not to headlamp?

A headlamp is essential for early morning starts and emergencies in the dark. DO NOT use it at night (or early morning) in the albergue. A glowing screen will provide lots of light for toilet trips. If you must get going in a dark albergue in the morning arrange your pack the night before and...

All your Backpack questions and Answers 1 Thread

Both my Gregory 35 and my son's Gregory 40 squeezed into the Ryanair bag sizer - like you say length being the contentious issue. Ryanair are the Nazis of carry on luggage.

    Running Shoes or Hiking Shoes?

It seems to me that there are only subtle differences between a trail runner and a hiking shoe. Weight is important - a pound on your feet is worth ten pounds on your back (I read that somewhere). I always add a substantial after market insole to either walker or runner (for some reason stock...

    How many pairs of shoes??

Light hiking shoes or boots with an aftermarket insole (lots of concussion in a million steps on a hard surface). Crocs for evenings (when your feet need a break) and walking sections where your feet request a break. Showering 'aux natural'. Well, it's like washing your feet with..... . I did...

    30 L (28L Actually) Pack big enough -- Or 40 L better ---

Nobody can tell you what size pack you need. Wisdom says smaller and lighter is prudent. My wife used a 30l., I used a 35l. and we were fine. My 35 had enough extra room to stow a loaf, some cheese and fruit. But if you're fit and need a little more stuff you may need a bigger bag. Remember...

    No phone....risky?

Spring and fall Caminos I haven't felt that a phone would have ever been used. I don't pre-book accommodation because I like the freedom to end the day where it feels appropriate. News from home and messages are dealt with on my Ipod over cafe con leche at a wifi cafe.

Backpack weight... too little or too much??

Two suggestions. Can you get a smaller pack? A 35 l. pack could weigh as much as a kilo lighter than yours (my wife got by with 30l. Take a lightweight poncho instead of rain jacket and pants. Otherwise your list looks very sensible. Cheers.

Backup Footwear - Open or Closed sandals?

You have to go with what feels best for you. I take Crocs. Hang them on the outside of my pack. Wear them sometimes for a change when walking. Nothing beats their comfort and they are stylish (a joke).

    Sleeping sack and sleeping bag?

I have walked in October. Pack weight probably 10 lbs. Albergues are heated and generally have blankets. So a light sleeping bag. I had a T shirt, long sleeved shirt and a shell jacket. Bought a fleece jacket in Leon. My advice is take absolutely as little as possible and add along the way.
