5 seems a good group to have; John and I felt a bit vulnerable last year being on our own, especially following John's nasty "tumble" before Lantz. Have you considered the detour we took from Sorauren over the "hill" to the lovely albergue (Sagrada Corazon) at Zabaldika on the CF?
We walked Baztán starting from Bayonne on Aug 17th. We did not meet any other pilgrims so had the lovely clean albergues all to ourselves. Take care and use poles would be my advice; there are parts that are tricky underfoot and if you fall, as my husband did, there is unlikely to be anyone...
We took the alternative route from Villatuerta, but found we had to fend off locals who assumed we had lost our way! Had to be very persistent. We rejoined the main route around Irache.
We'll be eager to hear your reports; we plan on walking the Baztán late Aug and then continuing on CF from Pamplona. We originally planned on doing that for our first Camino in 2013, but our Basque friends advised us to start from Roncesvalles for our first experience.
