Listening to music while on the camino

I usually did not listen to music. The only time I did was when I was struggling because it helped me keep going. So I would walk for a song and then stop to recover a bit and walk for another song. I would always walk with just one earbud in though to stay aware of my surroundings.

    What's a Slow Walker?

I average about 3-5km per hour. I could probably walk a little faster but I would rather be slow and comfortable than fast and uncomfortable. I prefer a maximum distance of 20km per day to accommodate my slow pace.

    Schwab account questions

I used my Schwab all along the Camino for purchases and paying for lodging as well as ATM withdrawals. There was never a hold put on the card. Not to say it couldn’t happen I suppose, as I think it would be merchant-specific, but it never happened to me.

How far do most typically walk before resting?

I took a break whenever I felt like it mostly. I had a few times I took two breaks less than an hour apart if I was having a tough day. A lot of times it had to do with when I needed to use a bathroom or sometimes a place just looked like a cool place to stop or I saw people I knew so I stopped...

    Documenting the Journey

I feel great, but I miss the Camino a lot. I think about it every day. Struggling to get into a good walking routine now that I am home though. I don’t want to lose the fitness I gained! Life is much easier when the only thing you need to do each day is walk. I think your plan of a short...

    Documenting the Journey

My advice is to do something every day, even if just for yourself. The days of walking all kind of blend together after a while. I made daily videos that I posted on YouTube and I have just started going through them now that I have been home a few weeks. I am so glad I have them to remember...

    Luggage Transport - Why?

This makes no sense to me at all. People who ship a bag or book accommodations ahead walk the same path, stop at the same bars, and interact with the largely the same people as those who don’t do those things. I will admit that staying entirely in prebooked private accommodations, as I did...

    Luggage Transport - Why?

I used Correos for the entire 40 days of my Camino. I did so for a few of reasons listed in the survey but in the end it came down to that is what felt like the best choice for me. I don’t regret it at all and I don’t think it really matters why someone chooses this option. I think everyone...

what to do with pack while in a cathedral

I was just in the Leon Cathedral yesterday and I wore my pack as I walked around. There is also a separate museum there and I had to take off my pack for that but they showed me a little corner where to put it until I was done with the museum.

    Poppies

I have really enjoyed the poppies too.

    Tour Groups

I started booking about 6 months in advance. But booking that early isn’t really necessary unless you want to be picky about where you stay. I just wanted to be able to get my first choice.

    Tour Groups

I am on the Camino right now, having booked all my accommodations in advance. It is very easy albeit a little time consuming to do it yourself. The gronze website is your best friend for doing this. I had a really bad blister on my foot about a week into the journey and I took taxis for the...

    Payment on Booking .com

I use my home currency when I am looking for places because that is the easiest reference for me. But you are charged in the local currency so the actual conversion might be different based on whatever the bank exchange rate is on the day the charge is made. At least that is how I understand it.

    Albergue or hotel

I am staying in private rooms the entire way, but I am prioritizing albergues with private rooms and communal meals. I have zero interest in sharing sleeping space but definitely want to meet people. I feel like I will get the best of both worlds that way.

    Euro Denominations

I have found it difficult to even use 50 Euro bills unless I am spending close to that so there isn’t much change. I prefer 20s and below.

Dull, boring, urban and sketchy (sketchy?)

I think there is a huge difference between: This is what I do because it is best for me and This is what I do and it is the correct way to do it and anyone who doesn’t do it this way is wrong. One of these is stating an opinion and one of these is being judgmental. I get it. It is difficult...

Are the longer Caminos a Sabbatical from marriage for some people?

I agree with this. I was also slightly annoyed by the article. I am sure there are some that do walk as a way to get away from a spouse for a while. But I don’t think choosing to walk alone is an indication that it is the person’s motivation. And if it is, there isn’t anything wrong with...

Do private rooms at albergues generally have private bathrooms as well?

I am in the process of booking private rooms (most with private baths) for my Camino next year, and I would say the average is probably about 45 euros.

    For introvert crowd-averse pilgrims

I have always disliked crowds, but Covid social distancing really solidified it for me. I have learned to accept being an introvert and not see it as having the “wrong” personality type that needs to be fixed. I am reminded of the number of articles out there telling introverts how be more...

    When to purchase airline tickets?

I generally have a price in my head that I want to pay. If it goes below thst, I purchase the ticket. I start looking about 10 months to a year in advance. If it gets to be about four months ahead and I never saw the price I wanted, that is when I start to reassess. I fly internationally a...
