I think if you were to just explain the situation and ask them to use your actual start date on the Certificate of Completion when you visit the Pilgrim Office they would be willing to do that. Seems like a small ask to me.
Everyone walks their own walk. But this is what I would recommend. Before worrying about a guided or unguided pilgrimage work out a plan to prepare yourself before the walk. Walk a bunch of km with a backpack. Maybe 250 or so. Work yourself up to walks of 15 - 20 km at a go. If you do this...
There always has been and there always will be snoring in albergues and there always will be stories of nights of misery from those who have been kept awake thereby. Always. And all the complaints, lamentations, and shamings, as far as I can tell, have done nothing, repeat nothing, to reduce the...
If snoring bothers you then I suggest you take countermeasures. I recommend "mighty plugs" http://www.mcnews.com/mcn/features/2012SeptLastPg.pdf . They work for me if I choose to use them. But mostly I don't. If I hear snoring in an albergue it gives a warm fuzzy feeling. It means my people are...
If you are concerned about being woken up by early risers I have two suggestions:
Eagle Creek eye shades - they even have a pocket for:
Mighty Plugs ear plugs.
Or you could hope that somehow ill-mannered people will read a forum post, see the error of their ways and modify their behaviour...
Snoring is involuntary. A Spanish woman told me today that every pilgrim has the right to snore. I agree. And that will be aggravated by exhaustion and evil things like vino tinto. An apology might be a nice gesture but should not be expected. No one in an albergue should be expected to be given...
Bought a Valor chocolate bar to give to a friend as a birthday present on the Camino. Couldn't find any wrapping paper so I wrapped it in toilet tissue stained with yellow streaks from a highlighter. I told him that the Camino had provided.
If you are walking 800 km you are going to see every possible response to each of your questions. But to summarize: no, you are not guaranteed to have coffee available early in the morning and no, most albergues do not serve coffee early in the morning. On the bright side some albergues have a...
I agree completely with jozero although, as far as knives go, I am partial to the French Opinel No. 7 which is a simple but brilliant design which is light, locks open (and closed) using the twist collar and has a beautifully thin blade which is perfect for slicing and dicing everything from...
When I walked the Camino Frances in 2014 I walked much of it with a Spanish man who was in his mid 30s but had walked the Camino from Sarria when he was in high school. He enjoyed the 100 km walk very much but he definitely noticied the pilgrims who had come from further away and he recognized...
