Nicknaming the People You Walk With

My brother and I were "the Old Guys" among the group of younger people we kept encountering for dinners. A badge we wore with honor.

    0.0 and Sin Alcohol

So far, no one has produced a drinkable NA wine. Apparently it's much more difficult to produce than beer. But then, I remember the first NA beers were not nearly as good as today's. Maybe in a few more years they will have a decent NA wine.

    Staying motivated between Caminos

This is motivating me to get my well intended but largely neglected fitness lifestyle adopted. I finished a short camino last month, and encountered some health challenges during it, mostly self inflicted. I'll turn 70 this year, and have observed that things are starting to change. I'm...

They still ride horses, don't they?

There was a guy who brought his horse and dog from Germany in 21'. I guess he would be an equestrino? Saw them coming and again on their way headed back home. I heard the dog was trained to hold the reins, but didn't see it myself.

    Ditch Pigs 2023: La Rioja!

Tom, I hope all goes well for you both.

    Five Extra Days

Back home now, but wanted to comment on the half day walking the Camino Requena from Rebollar to Raquena. I have to agree with Bad Pilgrim's report on the Raquena, this is as sweet little walking section as I have encountered. It has it all, a wonderful mix of vineyards, pine forest, and some...

    Five Extra Days

I’ve had a couple of lovely days in València. It’s been a great place to dry out (only my clothing, it’s València!) from the past few weeks in Galacia. But I’m coming back in May to tour with my wife and my feet are getting itchy. Right now I’m on a cercanias train to do a couple of short days...

    Five Extra Days

Just bought a ticket to Valencia for tomorrow morning. Looking forward to seeing it not rain! I may go to Toledo for a day or two on the backside. Any recommendations on places to stay in either place? Under 40 euros is my range. If I walk I’ll stay at albergues. Edit: I just realized I have...

    Five Extra Days

I just arrived in Santiago, windblown, cold and wet after a short camino from Leon. I fly home from Madrid on the 9th. I’m looking for a short walk, or just a place to hang out, with the only criteria that it be as WARM AS POSSIBLE and in Spain. Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated.

    Lunch in Madrid

Since I will be holding a train ticket from Chamartín to Leon for later in the day, does anyone know if I can take the shuttle train back and forth between Chamartín and Atocha? It's pretty fast and frequent and would get me to the downtown area with minimal delays.

    Lunch in Madrid

Hopefully the construction is done or at least better. Depending on whether my flight arrives on time this may be my best option! Gracias

    Lunch in Madrid

Thanks for your suggestions (except the MacDonalds! 😛). Mercado looks really fun, but yeah, it's probably farther downtown than I'll go. Closer to Atocha Really intriguing, looks like it's grown from a single shrub! Also pretty far downtown though. I wish I was leaving from Atocha!

    Lunch in Madrid

I get in to Madrid mid morning next Thursday, and catch a train to Leon in mid afternoon. Anyone know a good place for lunch on the way to or close to Chamartín train station?

    Donating in donativos

When I was young, just after high school, I worked and saved and then took off traveling. I carefully hoarded my money, worked where I could, and traveled for over a year. I'm glad I did. Young and poor is a traditional time to travel, before you take on obligations, a career, and family.

    Need Advice on Route Change

I've had some of the same concerns about the crowded conditions reported by some. I get into León on the 19th and plan on starting the 20th or 21st, depending on jet lag. My plan is to walk as far as Ponferrada, trying to stay off stage as much as possible. If it seems too busy, I plan to...

    Donating in donativos

I'm more generous at Donativos because I'm pretty sure some people take advantage of them. I figure donativos are not much cheaper to run. Paying the private alburge market rate at a donativo won't account for those who either can't afford much like the OP, or those who are slackers. I am...

    Donating in donativos

I agree with peterexpatkiwi. Offering your time and assistance is meaningful.

Why did you do the camino? Help me out!

You leave all of your undone projects, your ongoing relationships, and the constraints of your daily life behind. Life is simple, you have only another day walking to focus on. It's like going on a spiritual retreat, but you see new places, accomplish a positive measurable thing every day, and...

    Fall Camino Decision

Would appreciate hearing from anyone talk about infrastructure on the Invierno late Oct/early Nov. Thanks!

    Fall Camino Decision

I guess it really is the luck of the draw. Thanks!
