    Mean, uncompromising mind

LOL! :p My wife and I are fond of that expression, but we add something at the end, i.e. "It's like OCD, but the letters are in the right order, like they should be!"

    Yikes, people

I'd like to say that in addition to finding tons of helpful advice here (both practical information as well as "you can do it" pep talks), I find the tone here to be wonderfully and refreshingly supportive and kind. I gave up Facebook entirely for Lent this year and I only glance at it 10% of...

LIVE from the Camino Buy earplugs if the snoring annoys you...

I don't have a problem with the bed size, I'm only 5'4". :) But I am thinking I might just try to hit the bed early so I'm asleep before any "roncadores/as." I did a sleep study earlier this year and apparently fell asleep in 6 minutes, and that's with all of those ridiculous wires attached to...

LIVE from the Camino Buy earplugs if the snoring annoys you...

Thank you, I do have earplugs already in my backpack, ready to go, courtesy of my wife. ;) I've found, though, that earplugs only reduce ambient noise, they don't eliminate it. In my experience, they don't reduce noise enough to allow me to sleep, but we shall see. You might say I'll just "play...

    Booking.com (Good service? any complaints?)

I'm a big fan of that site and I use it a lot, BUT: I wanted to treat myself to a night at the Parador in Leon, and Booking.com does not offer the "Especial Peregrino" that can be had by booking directly, hence I decided to book directly through the hotel's website. Saved about 17 Euros that...

LIVE from the Camino Buy earplugs if the snoring annoys you...

I won't rule out albergues before actually walking and staying in some, don't get me wrong. However, I need to be able to reserve the right to stay elsewhere in case the troubling noises begin to ruin my vacation. Let me give you a quick illustration: last September my wife and I were in Berlin...

LIVE from the Camino Buy earplugs if the snoring annoys you...

Oh, dear, this thread is starting to make me think I should pay for private rooms now rather share in an albergue. If I go to sleep first, I can usually sleep through anything. But I have a terrible time getting to sleep if others are snoring around me when I go to bed. And I'm a...

Begging for money along the camino

This reminds me of a quote we hear often at the National Cathedral: Life is short, and we do not have much time to gladden the hearts of those who journey the way with us. So be swift to love, and make haste to be kind.

Begging for money along the camino

Indeed, a smile or a kind word costs $.0. :-)

Begging for money along the camino

I agree, you mentioned in an earlier post about money being extracted at the end of a gun. That's exactly my point, too. It's one thing to allow individuals to make their own minds up about whether to donate to beggars, real or fake. But often that spirit of altruism gets translated into laws...

Begging for money along the camino

Well said. I live in the Washington, DC area and when I lived in the city, begging was ubiquitous. I rarely give money to beggars, exactly for the reasons you've stated. Our area has enormous resources for the truly needy, and I prefer to donate to worthy charities and do some volunteering work...

    Interesting Pilgrim food hacks?

I'm an American and I like Branston pickle! Ugh, now Marmite, that stuff IS an offence! ;-)

    Training schedule for the busy

So glad you mentioned that, @ChloeRose! I actually went shopping for trekking poles last week and wound up getting some nice ones from Black Diamond. A friend had recommended them. I just got them and am looking forward to adding them to my routine. (plus my backpack has built-in straps to hold...

    Training schedule for the busy

Thank you, @Thornley. I don't have 35 days, just 30. But I'm not absolutely wedded to walking every single kilometer. If I get closer in and discover I won't make it in 30 days, I'll simply skip ahead a bit. My main goals are to start in St Jean and end in Santiago. But I'm not above hopping on...

    Training schedule for the busy

Thanks, @JenCamino! Great suggestions. I've started wearing the hiking shoes a lot, particularly after work (they're not really work appropriate with my suit, LOL). I LOVE my shoes, and they are just right for me. I ended up buying a pair larger than I normally wear, in order to account for just...

    Training schedule for the busy

Thanks. I've been doing more walking than usual this week, including 2 1-hour walks with my backpack at full load. Surprisingly, my pace was about the same with it as without (averaging about 17-18" per mile). I'm also really loving my hiking shoes. I got new insoles to replace the liners that...

    Training schedule for the busy

Most days, yes. I walked for an hour yesterday and also last Friday. I'm definitely planning to walk as much as possible, I just don't have the schedule to accommodate 8-10 miles of walking in a single day. I'd have to quit my job and I'm not (financially) ready for retirement yet. :D

    Training schedule for the busy

That's awesome!! As I alluded to in my initial post, I simply don't have the time in my schedule to walk 8-10 miles (unless I did it in the middle of the night, LOL). The only day in the week that I don't have a very busy schedule is Saturday, but that's normally the only time I can run errands...

    Training schedule for the busy

Thanks! I just turned 53 but a doctor told me I have the body of a 19 year-old. (Maybe he was just being kind) I attend a very vigorous fitness boot camp about 2-3 times per week and I like taking walks during my lunch hour. I just want to make sure I'm used to the long distances the Camino...

    Training schedule for the busy

I am looking forward to training for the Camino, but I have a question for all of you. What's the best way to work in a training schedule if you're really busy, especially on the weekends? I have a full-time job Monday through Friday, but I also sing as a church musician on Sundays, which...
