I highly recommend getting a Revolut card. It is accepted basically everywhere. You can have multiple currencies on one card. It is a 4 digit pin. No ATM fees. I know it doesn't help you right now but I have a Revolut card. It works in Europe and the US and you can do currency exchange on the app. Its great for travel.- boski

Wanting to avoid all albergues
I am also retired military. I used trailsmart it lists all the lodgings and has there contact info. I did the coastal route with the spiritual variant in May. That said I used both and some of the albergues are quite nice and semi private or private. Also most of the hotel will offer a pilgrim...- boski

Washing Clothes
There was rarely machines and if there was they were always busy. I used a scrubba and soap chips. Its fast easy and u can keep your sweaty dirty clothes in it wheu aren't using it. Great piece of equipment- boski

Frances or Norte for first camino?
I have done both. The norte is more physically challenging and some of the distances between albergues are long. I was there in the summer and it was quite crowded. Not on the trails but in the albergues. We had too get hotel rooms a few times. Some people were leaving at 4 am to beat the rush...- boski
