Camping on a Camino Portugues route.

I agree with Gerard! Plenty of places to camp discreetly - we did on Portuguese... also on VdlP , Norte etc.....No problems with locals - if they even notice u they are concerned for u and will maybe offer water etc! As females - yes, a little more discreet maybe - many of my cycle buddies camp...

Clothing Theft/Loss/ Misappropriation on the Camino

Nappy pins! More robust than safety pins. I had my (even after washing) disgusting socks nicked off the washing line at a campsite returning from a Camino - they must have been desperate...😬

Albergue idea - group snorers together, away from non-snorers

I spent a couple of weeks on the Portuguese with extreme toothache, so did not sleep at all. I can vouch that EVERYONE snores at some point of the night! Everyone farts too... But the rustling, headtorch-flashing doorbanging and loud whispering seem to be chosen activities....😉🙄😁

John Brierley is seriously ill - an invitation to send messages of thanks and support.

Thank you John for your wonderful guide to the Camino Portuguese - we used it for our first Camino - and despite you emailing me to say - 'Do not try and take a bicycle over the Portela Grande' - I so wanted to follow every step of the Camino - so we did! With fully laden bikes we had possibly...

Tradition…. When to start wearing your scallop shell?

it also acts as a non-verbal identifier - I have had people of many different countries - hail me as a pilgrim!!

Tradition…. When to start wearing your scallop shell?

I got one after my first Camino - and it has stayed on my pannier ever since - on many pilgrimages - of christian and pagan 'flavours' - and on any journey I make. It is hanging on my bike now - ready to go cycling around Portugal (some sections of Camino! yay) I have also delivered 2 ten years...

For coffee addicts that like to walk early

I would not, could not give Nestle a penny! Since I usually cycle (but even when i walk - I take a Handpresso machine - bit chunky but makes a perfect espresso..... you can now get very light machines that heat the water and make proper coffee - but I will stick with mine till it wears out!

    Cooking your own food

https://www.handpresso.com/en/handpresso-pump-pop-blue-23.html and now they come in jazzy colours! I have used mine regularly cycling and hiking for about 9 years - and I now need to change the seals - which should cost less than £10 This little machine has saved me from despair - and got me up...

    Cooking your own food

Oh yes - we always take a handpresso espresso maker! I need at least two hits of coffee a day to keep me cycling - and I cannot afford to stop at cafes that often - so it is well used! The other 'extra' item is a small seed sprouter (not for walkers perhaps!) so we get fresh sprouts every third...

    Cooking your own food

we always take our gas stove and a cooking pot - but we are usually on bikes! Have cooked up outside albergues where there are no or busy facilities - but found most albergues have a few utensils/pots etc. It is much cheaper to cook for yourself - or communally - we tend to have the pilgrim meal...

Where did you walk ( locally ) in 2021?

We spent much of october walking on Anglesey - sacred isle of Mon! It is a fantastic place to walk - particularly the coast. Beautiful scenery and wildlife (clouds of choughs/seals and their babies/black-throated diver!) packed with ancient monuments, passage tombs, stone monoliths and holy...

Experiences of ghosts, premonitions or presences?

Cycling the Norte - I was toiling up some hills and noticed that there was the word GIN written in chalk on the road - several times (perhaps a bike race had been on) I then realised it was the anniversary of my Father's death - he was a great lover of gin...! So we hightailed it to the next bar...

So, what progress generally on allowing camping on Caminos .....

I would love to stay in albergues every night but just can't afford it! It took 5 weeks for us to cycle the VdLP - from Cadiz but still slow by many's standards!! Stayed in some wonderful albergues....but camped 2 nights in 3. Many have not got the finances to pay for accom. every night - there...

So, what progress generally on allowing camping on Caminos .....

wow - as someone who has wild camped my whole life in many european and asian countries - I cannot quite believe how many people seem to think it is irresponsible and creates mess in ANY way at all...! The whole point of wild camping is that you only leave footprints and take memories.... There...

    COVID and camping

Hi, i feel the 'asking permission ' bit is rather difficult.... trying to ascertain who is the owner of any piece of land is usually impossible!! A piece right outside someones house - yes - but a corner of unused land, a field margin, beside a vineyard.... I have asked and never found an...

    COVID and camping

I camped most nights on the Norte, some of the Ingles and much of the Portuguese. It was fairly easy if you are happy to forego warm showers etc! But if you wash when warm water is available - take a trowel and leave no trace - you should be fine! You will still be buying food etc along the...

Have you been married a long time?

29 years. He is my 'other half' - we feel we are better together than the sum of us apart... We have faith in each other. We have trust (that took some learning!) We have worked together. Built a house together. He looked after me during years of illness and never gave up. We have walked and...

    Something understood

Sorry I Haven't A Clue... Kitchen Cabinet, Poetry Please, Desert Island Discs, Gardener's Question Time, Infinite Monkey Cage, - and if they didn't have The Now Show and The News Quiz I wouldn't get ANY news or current affairs at all.... jo(54!)

    Something understood

I just came on the forum to post about it too - what a brilliant programme - Satish Kumar is a lovely guy.... And strangely - even though I live in Devon (miles to the south!) I have not made this short but lovely pilgrimage....although I have often been to St Nextan's Cleave - a few miles west...
