She writes things that didn’t actually happen. Like having her feet washed when she got to the pilgrims office in the cathedral. I’ve researched that to no end and not found anybody who either saw that or experienced that. I enjoyed the book - but with a grain of salt. Could be just at another...
I loved the American Pilgrims hospitalaro training and have volunteered twice at Ribadiso, once in Nájera, and once in Grado. I love listening to stories.
On and off. The mice in the kitchen flicked on and off all night at one albergue I stayed at a few years ago. Nothing you can do there. But when you use a bathroom, use a headlamp.
Use Wise Pilgrim. For each albergue, you’ll see their opening/closing schedule. Then you call to be certain they aren’t closed because it’s, say, Tuesday.
It’s always good to keep in mind that while there can be an infinite number of pilgrims, there is typically a finite number of beds. Medieval pilgrims knew that.
I really dislike the term “stage.” I stop whenever and wherever I like, ignoring the suggested stages. There’s really only one stage - from your house to the Cathedral. It’s much less confusing to look at it that way than to get caught up in someone else’s Camino. Do yours.
I’ve done that - a private Portugués Camino with Ultreya Tours. It was so incredible. Totally looked after, all we had to do was walk. We met the most amazing local hotel and restaurant owners. I’d do it again.
I’ve donated a stamp to a stop on the Camino. You need to establish just a few things: is it ON the Camino, do they wish to have/use one, and what does it look like. Then you simply produce art to a printer who makes self-inking stamps. It can be so simple as their name, the name of the town...
I've written about winter walks. There are some tricks to maximize the heat, but at bare minimum, a warm sleeping bag and long Johns should do in most albergues.
I love walking in December. I went from Pamplona to Villafranca del Bierzo in 2021 - I found that Aprinca website not to be helpful. Things were open that were not on the list, and that can affect decision-making, and things were closed that they said were open - also not helpful. Use Booking...
