The one thing I should have done before I left for the Camino

In addition to the above we also carry a notarized letter with our passports in English and in Spanish detailing what we want done with our remains in the unfortunate and hopefully unlikely event that we die in Spain. Without that information for the authorities you could potentially be buried...

    Shower/bathroom etiquette in the albergues?

I am lucky if I get my husband in the house before he strips (after working in the barn on the diesel tractor), but we have no neighbors for over a mile from our house! We have to remodel our bathroom so the old claw foot tub is going on the deck for soaking!!

    Local Travel Agency?

Our first camino was the last 100 from Sarria with CaminoWays. Our second was the Primitivo planned by ourselves- the price of the entire Primitivo for two was less than half of what it cost for the last 100. That was with staying inn private accommodation on the Primitivo as well.

Inviting reflections on the wider costs of walking a Camino

Nonetheless, if used appropriately, offsets can be a useful tool in the fight against global warming. Note that the website said that offsets can be a useful tool- not that they state that offsets are actually a useful tool to truly offset emissions. Until someone can show me that sending...

Inviting reflections on the wider costs of walking a Camino

I still think this scheme is like buying indulgences- or throwing money into a fire. Unless I can absolutely verify that my hard earned dollar is actually going to help offset emissions I will stick helping people locally with immediate needs.

Inviting reflections on the wider costs of walking a Camino

It appears that you are relying on someone else to lower their emissions so you can increase yours to fly. Seems to me to be a lot of room for scams. From the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Climate Portal: Although carbon offsets have appealing benefits, it is important to keep in mind...

Inviting reflections on the wider costs of walking a Camino

Can you explain how you verify the environmental benefits of your purchase? How do you know that the emissions that you cause by flying are actually offset- by whom and how?

Inviting reflections on the wider costs of walking a Camino

I agree- what we do in the rest of our lives matter rather than what we do to go on Camino. We too, grow, forage and hunt. We feed the birds so they pollinate our plants. We buy locally the best we can- it is much easier in the Spring and Summer months than the Winter. We purchase clothes when...

    Pilgrims menu/menu del dia

I understood what you meant and I laughed because I am a non-peskytarian-- I eat nothing that comes from the water- no pescado ni marisco.

    Pilgrims menu/menu del dia

Here in WV- honey would have been replaced with darling- actually darlin!! 🥾 🍷 🌶️ :)

A shout out to el pimiento de Padrón

If you are having trouble growing the peppers try first placing the seeds on a wet paper towel that you have folded over. Place into a zippered plastic bag. When you see "tails" start to grow then plant the seeds. Take care not to damage the tails when planting. Since the growing season is short...

A shout out to el pimiento de Padrón

No recipe needed- heat EVOO just before smoking- add the peppers- saute and turn almost constantly until blistered. Pour on to a plate with all the oil, add a large flaky salt. Hold by the stems and eat the peppers, wipe up all the oil with a good bread. My year old supply of seeds still do...

When Posting Reviews on Gronze . . .

Others complained that they were "forced" to participate in religious activities at donativo parochials. Hello? They're run by the church? Pay for a private if you don't like religion? Sorry- I still don't know how to quote, but Anniesantiago's post reminded me of a post about the camino film a...

    It's unbelievably hot here!

I can't imagine such heat- we don't get more than about 90F (32C)? where I live. On the other end we can get very low -25 or -30 either scale. Stay inside and stay safe.

Listening to music while on the camino

Am I alone in that I think the cowbells provide music while on Camino? 🥾 😊

Spanish Induction Stove Tops...Alien Tech? or How to operate controls?

Definitely alien tech- we often stay in an aparthotel in Madrid and the first time my husband had to get someone from the front desk to come up to our room and explain. The controls are not intuitive to those of us who use propane!!

Dress Code (esp. Shoes) in Michelin restaurant in San Sebastian

We took a food tour in San Sebastian before walking and went to Beti-Jai Berria- no dress code. Pretty casual- food amazing!

Long live the traditional Spanish shops

I know this store well- have purchased many a meter of fabric when we have stayed in Madrid. Love the street sweep statue in the plaza nearby.

When using booking.com, double check a city location first... it can be confusing...

Another occasion when a professional made a mistake- we were supposed to fly from Charleston, WV to Tulsa, OK. Arrived at the airport and they had no clue about our flight- until someone noticed that the booking was for Charleston, SC.!!

    Drinking water @hotels

Thank you all for the water related chuckles. I have laughed out loud several times at some of the posts. I never worry about tap water while in Spain as it must be much more regulated than here in the wilds of southern WV. I live in the middle of 200 acres on the side of mountain. My water...
