Monte de Gozo - statue commemorating visit of pope has been removed

The monument was certainly deteriorating. I took these two photos in 2014 and 2018 which show the monument getting very rusty and also the concrete pyramid getting worse with a hole in it.

Does the Pilgrim office in St Jean still have transport to the Cross?

I assume the cross is Thibault Cross which is where the Route Napoleon leaves the road and continues up on a walking path.

Finding SUNJOO an old friend Aug-sept 2011

Congratulations Alan on meeting Paulo. I have read quite a few of his books and still have The Alchemist which I have read several times. One of my Camino friends Dermot Breen is Irish and we met in 2016 on the way from Santiago to Muxia. He had walked the Norte then was on his way to Muxia and...

Finding SUNJOO an old friend Aug-sept 2011

Alan, I was looking for some Camino items on Amazon back in 2016 which was where I spotted your film so ordered it straight away. Who knows when life will be getting back to normal? Now living alone and being in my 70's I am keeping fine thankyou. Hope you are too Alan. In your film, when you...

Finding SUNJOO an old friend Aug-sept 2011

Hello Alan. It has been great watching your film many many times. Your new friends Sun Joo and Luciano, as well as your home friends Jody and Tom are all good fellow pilgrims. I have walked the Camino every year since 2014 and sadly this year's has had to be cancelled. From previous pilgrimages...

Walking 1st week of Camino Frances 9-14 July from St Jean Pied de Port...advice welcome☺️

I will be in St Jean Pied de Port on Tuesday 10th July to start with my son the next day. There will be plenty of people around so you won't be walking on your own. You can walk and chat with people you are OK with, or just walk on your own with others in front and behind, so you will be safe...

    Frustrated in Roncesvalles

Sorry to hear that Alice. I have booked for July and when I got the confirmation email receipt, I printed it off and will take it with me as proof of my booking. I would recommend doing that.

2nd Camino - Repeat CF or try something new?

Despite his autism and learning difficulties, my son who will be with me this year loves to spend time walking. Last year he walked the Jubilee Challenge for the 2nd time on the Dartmoor Ten Tors weekend, and tripped over near the end grazing his forehead. Here is the Army video taken at the end.

2nd Camino - Repeat CF or try something new?

Hi Tim, I walked the Camino Frances from SJPP in 2014 and then walked to Finisterre and Muxia. There are some alternative route sections I wanted to do and places I passed through where I would like to stay, so I went back in 2015 and 2016 walking from SDPP again for the 2nd and 3rd time. In...

    Basque cider houses

Sidra is very much a local product in Asturias and also Galicia. I have tried it in the Basque country too. Altogether it is a wonderful local experience.

Renting a horse for small portions

I have met a few people who took a horse ride from Las Herrerias up to O Cebreiro to avoid the steep climb. Their packs were taken up by car and I think it cost around 35 euros.

Starting in Ponferrada at noon today , where to get credentials ?

You can get Credentials at the Albergue San Nicholas de Flue. It is at the lower side of a large car park near the town centre and I am sure you will be able to get directions there when you arrive. Buen Camino, Mike

    Walking in Sept

75 miles is equivalent to 120kms and so the best starting point for this distance would be Samos which will give you a walk of about 127kms to Santiago. The Monastery at Samos is a wonderful place to visit. Buen Camino

The Crown Jewel in my Camino - Reading at the Pilgrim Mass

In O'Cebreiro back in 2015, pilgrims were asked to read in several languages and I got to do the English reading. A wonderfully spiritual experience.
