A number of ALSA buses run from Leon to Virgen del Camino and on to different destinations, but all leave from Estacion de Autobuses immediately to the south of the railway station. Is this the new bus station? I was last there in 2019 and it looked fairly new (if basic.)
I second this in spades! The downhill stretch to Molinaseca is "challenging" (i.e. treacherous) in places even when bone dry. I wouldn't risk it in the wet. Stick to the road. And I hope @MARSKA feels better soon. You're doing great!
Let's not frighten off the newbies! Many thousands of walkers have completed this route without incident. I walked it last year, my 70th, and with a dodgy knee, and found that, with a trekking pole, and looking carefully at where I was going, it really wasn't that difficult. This, however, was...
I have walked the Napoleon route twice, in my 60s, with a dodgy knee, once in pouring rain and once in sunshine. Given the choice, I recommend the sunshine.
On each occasion I left St Jean Pied de Port at about 8:30-9:00 AM and comfortably reached Roncesvalles about 4:00 p.m, with a brief stop...
Per Fire Dragon's subscription: "The Three Musketeers," D'Artagnan did exist. It is not certain that Arthos, Portos, Aramis existed with those names but there is a statue of D'Artagnan in the center of the city of AUCH.
Not to derail this excellent blog, but there's a statue of all four...
Most of Spain has poor soil, sandy and full of stones. Removing them is very labour - intensive, and ultimately fruitless as the earth will constantly bring fresh layers to the surface. Spanish farmers have learned to live with them.
I agree. Definitely take the easier, paved road route, down to Roncesvalles, take a photo by the iconic sign ("Santiago de Compostela 790") and stroll on through woodland on a level path to Burguete. Nice village with two hotels and a supermercado.
I am on the Invierno and, at 8 p.m., the temperature is 35°. I am Scottish and my natural skin colour is pale blue. We Celts are not built for the Heat!
I have walked the Napoleon route twice, once in rain and low cloud and once in sunshine. It's a hike I will remember all my life. Can't say the same for the walk from Pamplona to Puente la Reina!
Good to catch up with your news. I thought the weather was bad in June 2019 when we were both in Burgos, (although you had the sense to sit it out for the first day, after which things improved) but this is obviously worse! I'm planning on picking up where I left off, in Leon, in June. Hope...
I once ran out of water on a baking hot July day on top of the South Downs between Brighton and Alfriston. Within 15 minutes I was looking enviously at the cattle troughs and wondering whether I could strain the scummy water through a sock. My tongue stuck to the roof of my mouth and I couldn't...
I think you'd be very hard pushed to find anywhere in France outside of small areas of Paris, Marseille and Lyon that ISN'T safe. I never have. You can safely walk the streets in Biarritz at 2 am if you feel so inclined. I have wandered round many European towns and cities late at night with no...
I, too, have crossed the Pyrenees twice in my 60s from SJPdP to Roncesvalles. The second time I carried on to Burguete which is an easy 40 minute walk from Roncesvalles.
The stiffest part of the route is the climb from Honto past Orisson. It's not much more than a mile, after which it is very...
