Finished a few days ago... am I the only one who

We definitely did benefit from the time of year we walked, and September is definitely not as busy as August. However I can say that the CF definitely was very busy at the time. The first days we stayed at the main stops - SJPP, Roncesvalles, Zubiri, Pamplona... and there were always dozens of...

Finished a few days ago... am I the only one who

I must say, walked in Sept-Oct 2015 and didn't see any crowds between Sarria-Santiago. If you want to avoid the crowds just stay in small towns, go outside the guide books. Some days between Sarria-Santiago I hardly saw anyone else. It's our choice to join the crowd.

St Jean to Roncesvalles in a day, or stop at Orisson?

If you can allow one extra day, then stay in Orisson. It's a difficult day and it's a good idea to start slow. I went straight to Roncesvalles, and I don't regret it. But going again, I'd stay in Orisson, because really, why not.

    Dangers in the Pyrenees?

There's road walking on Napolean Route too. Some cars passed by. As you said, not many - but they were quite fast.

    Dangers in the Pyrenees?

Well, it's not a dangerous road per se. So many people walk, usually without any specific problem. You'll see so many people around you and I assume wild animals aren't likely to show up because they don't like this kind of commotion (I've seen none). There are some potential problems. Check on...

    New vegetarian albergue in Reliegos

I sure hope so! If you find it please send Pedro the hospitalero the warmest wishes and hugs from me :)

    Vegetarianism on the Camino

Oh, also, we carried some TVP with us. It's very lightweight and very nutritious. It really saved us a couple of times. Get the tiny ones, and all you'll need is some hot water to soak them. Much cheaper than whey for example and very, very lightweight. It's a good emergency item to have for...

    Vegetarianism on the Camino

I'm vegan. And I made it all the way to Finisterre! So it can be done. You'll be fine. It's true, the Spanish love their meat. Being vegetarian is easier, honestly - you can get all your protein from the omelettes they love so much :) Your options are either - get the pilgrim meals without the...

    Caldo Gallego

Is it made of those tall cabbage-like plants? I saw them everywhere walking in Galicia in October. Are those the greens in the soup?

worried about being a slow walker

You shouldn't worry :) You don't need a guide to walk at all! I'd say it is important to have an idea about the distances between place to place and what's in each town. Where's the next albergue. But you don't need to stop at any specific place - you can let your feet and your heart be your...

any moments of "what the heck am I doing here" ?

I was expecting for those thought to come, convinced myself it was completely insane before I left and worried about regretting it. But they never came. (Edit to add: I remember when I left, an office mate said - when you're walking in the cold with 1 kilo of mud stuck to each shoe and hungry...

    2015 SEPTEMBER PILGRIMS

I must say, I walked SJPP - Finisterre 13 Sept. - 22 Oct. and though the first few days were extremely busy, doing my best to avoid the "Brierly stops" made a huge difference. I stayed in small villages most of the times, and some days my man and I walked almost completely alone, hardly seeing...

Our service project on the Camino-- Picking up trash

Thank you. I'm now in León and find myself disgusted by the amount of toilef paper I've seen from SJPP, behind every bush and on the Way. I'm sure it's bound to get worse as we go along. You've encouraged me to pick up a plastic glove and remove at least some of it. I hope more people will do...

    New vegetarian albergue in Reliegos

Hola! As a vegan peregrina I was extremely thrilled to find this new place today. The owner said it just opened two months ago and I couldn't find any information about it in English. It's called El Albergue De Ada and you can follow the arrows that will lead you there - but it's in c/ Real 42...

    Training? Absolutely necessary?

I think it's a good idea to do one 20-25 km hike with all your gear and clothes, so you know if they fit you right. While training we found out what worked well and what didn't.

    Vegetarians?

Hi Maria, I certainly hope so! I leave SJPP Sept. 13. The tortilla definitely isn't an option, but I don't worry. It's more of a challenge for us but we'll be fine, and worst case scenario - it's a tin can dinner... Hey, it's still food! ;)

    2015 SEPTEMBER PILGRIMS

I just let people at work know and we'll start looking for someone to replace me while I'm gone. After getting the plane and train ticket and booking the first night, now it really feels real! More than two months until we leave but I'm already pretty excited :)

Backpack for skinny woman over 50?

I'm younger but similar frame and also have a knee problem. I have an XS size Osprey Tempest 40 (which in XS is actually 38 liters). Still haven't walked the camino with it, only shorter trails, but I am very happy with it. Keeps the weight very well-balanced and is comfortable. The most...
