    Descent into Portomarin

There’s an easy way to go. Took it last year. Start out on the left-hand trail. After a little ways you’ll see a small blacktop road branch off on the left. It’s quite pleasant and goes down to the road that goes along the river. Turn right and you’ll see the bridge shortly. This is all on your...

    The Elvis Bar in Reliegos

Bending topic a little. Bar Elvis was closed in September 2022, but Reliegos was one of my favorite Camino towns. We stayed at albergue Tu Camino and ate at Bar Gil with the wind and the cats. The Meseta town has a Wild West flavor with the stark streets and the bodegas. Sounds like the Bar...

    Villafranca del Bierzo Bus Stop

Well, when you get to Spain, the easiest thing to do is to pop into a bar and ask about busses or taxis. I fell four times in one afternoon descending Cruz de Ferro in 2022. Then got sick and holed up in Villafranca for a few days. While there we were told to go to the tobbaconist in the town...

Is that OK to use Google maps for Camino Frances?

We just walked the Frances. We used Wise Pilgrim. Gronze, Mapy, and Apple Maps. Each had it’s forte. Mapy is scary accurate. So accurate it shows fonts and picnic tables ahead. Gronze shows distance between towns and mileage and lodging in each town. Wise Pilgrim shows Camino and lodgings...

New and Old trail into Portomarin

Later yesterday met a peregrino who came down the “new and improved “ trail also yesterday. They received broken-bone injuries and went to the hospital, ending their Camino. That’s what prompted me to post above. Not that I’m against dangerous routes, however. The vast majority go for the...

New and Old trail into Portomarin

Hiked to Portomarin today in a pouring rain. After studying the three routes on my Mapy.cz app and viewing the huge sign where the trails diverge, and reading the forum shares, we decided on the road on the left. (Left when facing the river before you cross it). It’s plainly visible on the big...

Anyone walked the Valcarlos this summer?

Walked St Jean to Val Carlos Aug 22 in a lite rain. Had a good meal at the shopping center. Saw one other peregrino all day. Easy small road hiking with a few steep parts. Considered the dire warnings about the route to Roncevalles and took a cab up there and got 2 beds in the basement!

Anyone walked the Valcarlos this summer?

We’re heading out of St Jean August 22 or 23 2022. To Santiago. Did the Napoleon 2019 and want to try the Valcarlos. Thanks
