Some Alburgues now CLOSED on the Camino

Hi All, The Refugio Gaucelmo [English Refugio] in Rabanal is now closed for the winter - due to reopen 1st April. However Reugio El Pilar in Rabanal is open all winter - has log fire, cooking facilities, can order meals and has bar, and most of all a good welcome. Brendan

Not as good as I thought...

Hi all :) have just been scanning through this topic and it reminded me of a good humoured Spanish pilgrim who was walking with her husband in 2005. They actually lived in Santiago but had started at Roncesvalles [ :?: I think]. He was very enthusiastic and maybe a little more serious about the...

Pilgrim died on Route Napoleón in March 2009?

Hi Jochen and welcome to the Forum, :) More than one pilgrim has died in the Pyrenees over the years. The winter conditions last longer in the mountains and it is neccesary to check the weather forecast and get advice from people in St.Jean before crossing. The general advice is that if...

So why do you do it...?

Hi All, :) I just can't resist adding my 2penneth worth to this topic. A pilgrim does not have to justify/explain to anyone, but perhaps a story might fit here. Many years ago when holidaying on the island of Lindisfarne (north of England, cut off from the mainland at high tide) we were asked...

    From Leon to Santiago

Hi Sylvia, Congratulations on your pilgrimage and so glad you had such a great experience :D . Hope the memories are long lasting :!: Regards, Brendan

    Sad news

Dear Javier and Sil, Thanks for posting the news. I always find it moving coming across the site where a pilgrim has died. Perhaps one comfort (eventually) for their relatives is to know that these sites are honoured by other pilgrims with flowers and a few moments of quiet or prayer as they...

    Busy Camino

Hi Peregrnos :) May is a busy time on the Camino. I worked as hospitalero at Rabanal last year in the 2nd half of May and there were nights when every bed in the village was taken, (no exaggeration) and it was then mattresses on the floor. Best try to stop at the smaller, less popular places -...

Verbiage for a Letter of Introduction

Hi Sylvia, :) If you want a Credencial there are several possibilities. Since you are at Moissac you could try for letter of introduction there, but I think you may be able to pick up a Credencial either at the tourist office or maybe the convent that welcomes pilgrims. Alternatively, since you...

    From Leon to Santiago

Hi Sylvia and welcome to the Forum :) You haven't said when you intend to walk but since you have said you are not seasoned walkers be careful. 8) Sil(lydoll) has said that starting from Leon means approx 26kms per day - in view of what you have said I wouldn't try to walk that from the start...

    It's happening! One more sleep....

Buen Camino Clarissa and enjoy your pilgrimage :) Brendan

    Sleeping Outside?

Hi Marko, I never slept outside on a regular basis but did it a few times and there are places where it is relatively convenient to sleep close to the refugio and use the showers etc. (You are entitled to do this). The advantage is that you have an air conditioned room, lots of space, a view of...

Thank U, farewell and Buen Camino

Buen Camino to all you pilgrims settting out over the next weeks :) . I'll be keeping lookout for you on the Forum. I might see some of the later starters in Rabanal last 2 weeks of June - working as hospitalero at Refugio Gaucelmo. Best wishes, Brendan

    Walking in July/August 2008

Hi Anna, Welcome to the Forum :) . As mentioned by others the numbers can vary but it gets more crowded the nearer you get to Santiago. In 2005 some refugios were full, June, but some of us still used the showers, etc and then safely slept outside next to the refugio if the weather was good. It...

    Sleeping bag in April/June

Hi Sonia, :) I have been on the Camino Frances during April/June as pilgrim and hospitalero and it can be cold in the refugios at night, not all have heating. In the second half of May this year at Rabanal, night temperatures were often around the 6 C mark or lower. Buen Camino, Brendan

    Merry Christmas............... Feliz Navidad

Thank you Javier for the photo - beautiful. The information board reminds me of similar boards on the route from Le Puy. Feliz Navidad

    Photo Book

Hi Sil and Mike, I'm not sure what pilgrims are looking for re photo book of the Camino. However I do have a beautiful book, given to me by a French pilgrim with whom I walked for 2 weeks in 2005, and we kept in contact; I visited her earlier this year when she gave me the book. The book has...

    one week in April!!

Hi Eala and Husband, Welcome to the Forum :D . It's a little difficult to advise since you don't give much information about yourselves, so the advice has to be a bit general. Assuming you intend to walk for a week and not wanting to be too strenuous, (approx 20 km per day), it puts your start...

    Laughter

Hi Peregrino Blanca, Wonderful idea re 'funny incidents'; sorry I can't think of one at the moment but maybe with some replies I'll get inspired! However, and this is honest, it had crossed my mind a few days ago to suggest the most 'crazy/odd/peculiar/obscure and possibly useless' TIPS...

Santiago early May when to arrive to avoid the most crowded

Hi Molle, Welcome to the Forum Just another voice suggesting that you should be fine with the dates you have chosen. Kiwirich says he 'got stuck in a surge of pilgrims.' That sort of thing happens. I was working in the 'English' refugio at Rabanal during the last 2 weeks of May this year and...
