The receiving mobile phone in its resident country or area doesn't pay anything to receive calls. This, as far as I know is the same in all developed countries at least.
A full guide book is not necessary as such but is useful when wanting to AVOID places where the masses will stop. Most people on the camino like to plan and walk it within a framework that reminds them of home. I recommend a map with accommodation shown in case of emergency but other than that...
Just don't stress. If walking in summer you will probably want to start a bit early yourself and there are many options. Just avoid the main stages in the Brierley book if the stage looks busy:)
The river route into Burgos is pleasant enough, it just seems to go on for an eternity. Personally I am happy that I was fortunate enough to walk every step with my pack to Fisterra:)
