I've tried to get to many of these suggestions. Thank you. The market was my favorite destination!
FYI for current travelers re: Pilgrim Museum- from what I gathered with my limited Spanish, I believe the museum is temporarily closed as it moves to another location (or shifts exhibits, or...
I'll summarize my top 5 with just this:
The Camino provides.
If you're inclined toward worry and over planning (like me!) repeat repeat repeat until you believe it. The Camino provides.
Don't show up in SJPdP empty handed, broke, and totally clueless; I'm a believer that God helps those who...
Wow... Many more suggestions that I'd expected! So glad I asked... And now wishing I maybe had more time to explore.
Thanks very much, everyone. It's been an incredible month, and will end seemingly quite well!
Hello,
I've walked 700k with a fast moving group and will have 3 days to spend in Santiago this weekend. Of course, there will be festival activities. Would anyone like to offer suggestions of what to see/do/eat/etc? I'm perfectly fine sitting in a square and people watching, but I don't want...
Once we arrive (typically about 12) if the alburgue is open we check in, shower, hand wash that day's clothes, get lunch, then nap! If I don't nap I just hang out in the town square, mingle with pilgrims, or stroll around bigger cities. Journaling and planning the next day takes some time, and...
I've been walking from SJPdP since last Wednesday (Orisson very wise advice!) and the heat has been very difficult (and I'm from sweaty D.C!) I joined up with a small group that began leaving very early, like 4am, which I thought was insane but have quickly come to appreciate avoiding the...
I'm glad to hear this. I've been less than faithful to my training walks this month in the midst of DC's swampy heat wave, and thinking I'll never manage 30+ days of this in Spain!
Thanks everyone. I feel a sense of freedom, now, about either choice.
Regarding the pilgrim masses, since many mentioned them- did you just find out about them, and their time and location, along the way, as you entered a new town?
Veterans,
In about 2 weeks I'll walk from SJPdP to Orisson for the night. IF I feel strong and eager enough to walk 3-6K beyond Roncesvalles to sleep, will I be missing a pilgrim rite of passage by not staying in the massive alburgue in Roncesvalles? I've read all the wise advice about taking...
Oh good to hear from someone who made the same 4pm TGV trek. Do you recall a 10 minute window to change trains in Bordeau? Sounds tight! I guess it's not a major problem or they would have riders missing the transfer everyday!
Thanks for the note. I think I wil go with the suggestion to take the later train to Bayonne and the next day hike to Orrison from SJPdP, if there's a space. How wonderful to reunite with your son for the Camino! Best wishes with your jet lag recovery, and buen camino!
