Yeah that's pretty much my thinking. It was a pricey lesson to learn but all things considered there are a lot worse mistakes to make. I just consider it the "Idiot Tax" and try to learn from it.
It wasn't about the time (4.5 hours, actually), it was about the fact that I was afraid I wouldn't get into SJPP in time to make it to Hunto and would lose an entire day because of how the train schedule lined up. Losing two hours is fine. Losing an entire day wasn't.
If I had known at the time...
Believe me, I wish I'd stuck around. Instead I asked a cab driver how much it'd be to SJPP and misunderstood his reply. Imagine my surprise when we get there and I realize he'd said it'd be 125 euros, not 25. That's what I get for trying to get by on shoddy French.
I wound up getting into SJPP...
Just looked up the Transports64 schedule and it looks like it actually gets into SJPP at the same time the SNCF Bayonne-SJPP train/bus does. Seeing as I already have a ticket for that one (as a backup in case I can't find someone to share a taxi with at Gare Bayonne), I may as well just stick to...
whari, once again you are an amazing font of knowledge. Thank you! Bourricot is sadly unavailable this weekend but I'll certainly check out the other links you mentioned (especially Air Evasion).
My train from Biarritz to Bayonne tomorrow (19 Oct) puts me in at 10:20 and the next train from Bayonne to SJPP doesn't leave until almost 15:00, over four hours later. Are there any alternative means of transport? I checked the buses but they all take over four hours to make a one-hour trip...
Thanks for the heads up. I had assumed "open until October" meant through the end of the month. Apparently not!
As Orisson is closed, I'll just be using Hunto as my stopping point on the first day. Which means the train won't put me in too late to make it.
Thanks for the warning!
Fair enough. If that's how it is, that's how it is. I'd hoped there was an option or two my research wasn't finding (direct shuttle, paid rideshare, etc) but if the only way to get there is by train or taxi, then I'll just go with one of those. Thanks for the input.
Normally yes, except that the train schedule on Sunday is such that it will put me into SJPP in the late afternoon, too late for me to even make it to Orisson by nightfall. So even though I'll be ready to leave Biarritz at 10am, I'll still lose an entire day due to train times.
I also just...
Thanks for the link. I've actually got a post up in the Taxi Share thread, so hopefully there will be a response there. In the meantime, are there any carpool / rideshare sites that I can check out? I'm trying to keep costs down and hoping there's an affordable option if I can't find anyone to...
I need to leave Biarritz on 19 October after 10:00am and the buses / trains take longer than I'd like. Outside of posting on this forums, what are some good ways to find a carpool / ride share to St Jean from Biarritz? So far I've checked BlaBlaCar and a few other carpool sites, but to no avail...
Thanks again for all the input and feedback, folks! I think I'll be doing Frances this time around, mostly because Norte sounds like it'll be a little too empty that time of year (and many of the few-and-far-between albergues will be shuttered by then) and because it'll be too cold/rainy to go...
Thanks for the replies! The arduousness of the route isn't as much of a concern—though pushing 40 I'm in the best shape of my life, and it could be years before I take on the Camino again and can't guarantee I'll be in better shape then than now. Likewise, I've done my share of hiking and trail...
¡Hola! I'll be walking the Camino for the first time from roughly 20 Oct through 29 Nov and was originally planning on walking Norte, but the more research I do, the rainier and colder it sounds like it's going to be. It also sounds to be a lot more desolate, and while I'll be walking for...
