Pilgrim arrival statistics - August 2015

Thank you for sharing! I know I saw number and charts like these somewhere on the forum in the past, but couldn't find them for the life of me! I find it so interesting that the numbers peak in May then dip down again. I often assumed it rose after May and dipped down again after September, as...

Singing/Songs sung along the Camino Francis

Whenever there's a guitar around I guarantee you'll hear some U2, The Beatles or Leonard Cohen. Universally loved.

    For us sloooow walkers only!

On my second Camino I met a wonderful man who taught me how to be ok with being the last people out in the morning, to not worry about getting a bed because there will always be somewhere to sleep, and who didn't mind helping me over a fence to appreciate a view like this. And for that I...

How much french do I need to know?

You'll only spend a day amd a half in France so you should be fine. :P you cross the border into Spain on Day One.

    Can I Just Start Walking?

Just wanted to mention that you don't need a shell. Many people like to have one, but if you have one, know why you're carrying it, I think. My father (my walking partner on my 2011 Camino) insisted I needed one even though I didn't really care. So for 750 km I resented that silly shell that...

Question for anyone who has walked the CF in May and early J

Hi, I walked April 24 - May 28 of 2011. I never had a problem finding a bed, but in all honesty some people did. I'd say I saw it happen several times from Leon to Sarria. Some friends had to walk on or get a taxi, but usually the albergues brought out mattresses and let pilgrims sleep on the...

    Can I Just Start Walking?

You can just start walking. But for the record, the pilgrim office in St-Jean is a really useful resource! They'll give you a couple documents with distances between towns to help to make decisions each day about where you want to walk to. They also give you info about how many beds are in each...

    The Race of The Pilgrims

Haha! So true. It's so hard to explain sometimes. I find the hardest part is explaining the pilgrimage aspect... Me: It's an ancient 800 km Catholic pilgrimage. Them: Oh, you're Catholic? Is it through a church group? How many of you are going? Me: Well, no, I'm not... and I'm going by...

    Forum Addiction

HA! Brilliant. Hi, my name is Lindsey, and I'm a Camino addict. And I'm damn okay with that! I gotta fever... and the only prescription... is more cowbell. Er, I mean, Camino. ;)

    I'm crazy!

Re: I'm crazy! :P Just thought I'd point out that Canada has provinces, not states, and Montana is certainly not one of them! Manitoba, on the other hand, is a lovely place. ;)

Can You Give Me An Estimate? :/

Try going through a travel agent. It was actually cheaper for me to do that than to buy my ticket online, despite any fee they might have added on. They'll know all the ins and outs of flexible tickets and can give you some handy tips, even if you don't end up buying from them!

Can You Give Me An Estimate? :/

My advice is get a calendar (I just printed out some pages from iCalendar!) and literally plot day to day. The only guess work should be how long the Camino takes. For most people, it's between about 32-37 days from SJPP to Santiago. Leave a few days extra incase you find yourself sick or...

    Cheap Albergues on Frances Camino?

I found that albergues almost always ranged from 3 - 10€, even the private ones. You'd be hard pressed to find anything more expensive in an albergue. For 20€ you'd have at least a private room and an ensuite. Any dormitory-style room usually averages out at around 6€ per night. Buen camino...

    30 days or longer?

If you're worried about not feeling too rushed, you could consider starting in Pamplona instead. It's definitely possible to walk from SJPP in 30 days, and many people do it, but for myself I would start further on to give myself cushion days incase of injury, sickness or just not feeling like...

Where/how to save 5 days walking , time constraint.

For me the worst two days were from leon to astorga. It's all freeway walking and I found it to be bloody miserable. If i were trying to save five days, i'd start in pamplona and then skip that section. However the downside is that you jump ahead of the pilgrim family by doing that.

    Research project- FEEDBACK APPRECIATED!!!

Re: Research project--HELP/FEEDBACK APPRECIATED!!! Actually, the stats won't tell you the group size people walked in. But I would guess that 95% walk by themselves or with one other person.

    Research project- FEEDBACK APPRECIATED!!!

Re: Research project--HELP/FEEDBACK APPRECIATED!!! Hi Brittany, There are statistics collected by the pilgrim's office in Santiago that can answer all of those questions, because every pilgrim fills out a form to get a Compostella. They've often been posted on the forum, trying doing a keyword...

Weather on April: SJPdP and beyond

Re: Re: Weather on April: SJPdP and beyond Why bothering even bringing a pack if you don't feel like carrying appropriate clothing? :P You'll be glad you have the layers. Yes, a light pack is important, but so is having the right gear. April is unpredictable, so what falcon suggests is really...
