It is very sad to see a life lost but nowhere in the article does it say the route was closed. It says the route is closed in times of bad weather and then later tells how the pilgrims got lost in the fog. So we don't actually know if advice in SJPdP was not to take this route on that day
I'm the same age as you Bonita and have always kept myself reasonably fit. I've done about 20 or so walks in the last 3 months of about the average length of Camino stage and carrying the approximate weight I'll take with me. It feels of real benefit now in that the kilometers just seem to fly by.
