@sue-sheila, the advice you'll get from most folks who have walked the Camino is--don't bring a carry on PLUS a backpack. You'd be one of the few people doing that, and for good reason. It will be a pain in the neck to be trying to keep track of all that gear, plus you don't need all that gear...
Lots of good advice here. Not sure if anyone mentioned using an app on your phone to book ahead. I was a late-leaver and a slow walker who didn't want to rush during the day, so I would usually book ahead with the Wise Pilgrim Camino Frances app on my iphone. I would just book for that night...
OK, I can't help but add my own opinionated opinions to this now off-the-track thread!
--You can spend a few more euros and skip the pilgrims menu with its endless pork filets and fries, and eat a lot better and more varied on the Camino. The salads, grilled vegetables, fish, eggs, and fruit...
My favorite snacks were the "fruta seca", nuts and dried fruit, that you can get packaged or in bulk everywhere in Spain. I always had them in my pack, plus a juicy pear (fruit is good in Spain), a hunk of cheese, bread left over from breakfast--and chocolate! Great chocolate in Spain, too...
I'd agree with some others that finishing the Camino Frances would be a great choice, both because of winter conditions on the more remote routes, and to get a sense of completion. You could start in Pamplona, or maybe Roncesvalles if you had time. I didn't have time to walk to Finisterra at the...
Yes, I had similar experiences, judging groups to be " obnoxious loud hikers" and then ending up talking and walking with them, and suddenly they transformed into "friendly and enthusiastic pilgrims". Lesson about not making assumptions learned--though not necessarily always remembered now that...
Yes, I also recently walked the Invierno, and I got turned around coming down from Alto de Faro, and ended up improvising on country roads all the way to Rodeiro. Had some good conversations with local folks along the way who tried to steer me in the right direction. As usual, being "lost"...
For the Frances and to Finisterre, I had the Joos guide in English on my phone, and the Wise Pilgrim apps, which have good lodging info and allow for making reservations on booking.com if you want to do that. I had a paper copy of just Brierley's maps. Combined with google maps to help find my...
The Zabaldika parochial abbey was wonderful. It was a long walk there for me, lots of hills towards the end as I remember. I was very relieved to get the last bed!
Good to hear from you, and that you did things your way, and had a great experience. I've wondered how things went for you, since you were planning your trip the same time I was. I'm about two weeks from Santiago, moving slowly and happily along in the Camino Invierno in Galicia.
Do you think...
Hi, Dean! I live in Vermont so always fly out of Montreal, and eat there too whenever I can....You seem like a planner and very well- organized person. I am, too. One of the gifts of the Camino is that it can help you plan less and improvise more. I am just here to walk. If I'm tired, I stay an...
Sounds like you are making good decisions and doing all the right things. I agree with Alexwalker, by the third week you are in walking mode, and will find your feet more in the cities. I'm in O Barco now, a city in Galicia, and I look like an alien with my poles, pack and poncho, but can be in...
Sorry you are coping with this, Joodle! What has helped sciatica when I've had it is stretching (get specific stretches online) and walking. Lying down made it worse. Not sure about the pack, send ahead if you need it! Let us know how you are.
I got turned around in Logrono too, Angie! That was a long day, I remember. Are your challenges more physical, or more how you are feeling?
Glad you have days alone and company at night, that's a nice combination!
I'm now on the Camino Invierno and alone day and night! It's very beautiful...
Good to hear you are on your way, Angie! Just take your time, and lighten your backpack as you need to. Yesterday I sent my sleeping bag, sweater, gloves and socks ahead to lose some weight as my back was hurting; today I crossed the mountains after Rabanal in a very chilly wind and rain! But...
I'm just outside of Leon now. I am booking ahead many nights because I'm slow to leave in the morning (for example, here I am writing this) and like to take my time walking, so by the time I get to town late in the day, I want to be sure of a bed. Having said that--I am often walking alone with...
I have the Wise Pilgrim app on my phone, and Brierley's map only book, and that's enough. I threw my other guide book out about a week in, didn't need it.
