A Guarda to Santiago would be a great choice ... It's a gorgeous walk along the coast from there to Vigo (with some fine stretches of sandy beach too!) then you turn inland a bit to join the main route in Redondela. Enjoy!
Yes, do stay at Casa Fernanda ... it is a wonderful experience to share time with this generous and loving family. It will also give you a nice easy day into Ponte de Lima when you leave.
Your US bank cards will work fine for ATMs, restaurants and hotels ... you only need the chip cards for automated ticket places and gas stations I believe. I have used my bank debit card to get cash from ATMs all over Europe with no problems at all. Most small establishments only take cash and I...
yes, Albertinho covered it ... Casa Fernanda is an experience you will treasure. Booking.com is great and consistently gave me good options in the 25-40 euro range for a double with private bath & usually breakfast too. I recommend o'Cruceiro in Caldas de Reis -- private rooms and also a hostel...
last April we walked the Portugues' from Barcelos to Santiago. This October we walked the Portugues' Coastal route from Porto to Vigo (very beautiful and quite challenging in a few spots) ... then to Redondela to continue on the inland route to Santiago. We know what you did ;-)
I agree with Violinpatrick, if you go on to the Teo Albergue you will have a very pleasant walk into Santiago the next morning and easily arrive for the noon Pilgrim mass. We did this route (starting May 3, 2012) but went at a more relaxed pace (both of us 60+ sensible and not in a hurry). We...
We did the Caminho Portugués (from Barcelos) on May 3, 2012. Check out my page on virtualtourist: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/f081a/c4/
I'll be expanding it with a travelog with more photos soon, and a page on the Spanish portion, but this will give you an idea of what to expect as you...
We started from Barcelos in early May of 1012. The first 2 days were chilly and the first 5 days were rainy (off and on) then it got hot ... but we had a fabulous time. A light sleeping bag is a good idea as the nights can be cool. Your trip will be somewhat richer if you speak and understand...
We did the Portuguese camino in early May of this year. It was lightly traveled compared to the French route, but you will not be the only pilgrims ... when we arrived at the albergues there were usually 30-40 each night though the trails never felt that busy. From our experience you would be...
My partner and I did the Portuguese Camino just a few weeks ago and did pretty much what Arn advises. We spent a 2 days in Porto then took the train to Barcelos and spent another 2 days there (Festival of the Crosses) before setting out on our camino. We did stay at Casa Fernanda and agree that...
