Retiring in August and walking the Camino in celebration

Barbara, I've done that itinerary and can recommend. (I'm one of the freaks who even enjoyed the world's biggest acreage of Citroens in Porrino...Yeah, yeah...I just liked it, okay?) The only alteration I would consider is going a bit later than September. Cold isn't the biggest problem you are...

    New Aussie

Robyn, the idea of starting back in flatter country in France isn't a bad one, especially if, like me, you aren't interested in schedules. I started in Le Puy in the spring of 2010 and just started wandering. It was clear I wouldn't get to Santiago in the allowed Schengen-visa period of 90 days...

4 days out to Le puy

Guys, Le Puy is worth getting excited about. I did the Aubrac in snow and sleet and loved it. (There was also sunshine-and-rain, but that sounds less dramatic.) I'm told it's lovely by May. Must get back to the Auvergne, do the Stevenson or Regordane. Just the best. Bon chemin rob

New here...Looking at starting the Camino in Feb 2014.

Yes, the Valcarlos route is great. Don't have to follow that Napoleon guy. I'm a winter walker and got to enjoy the Cruz and O Ceb in perfect conditions. Of course, you can be unlucky with all that, at any time of year - and very unlucky in winter. The Portugues is a camino you can complete in...

Planning to walk Le Puy - are there any safety concerns for solo females?

Livelife, you are unlikely to remain solo for long, unless you so choose. Friends will abound, a little of the French language will help. The Way of Le Puy is a great choice. (I want to go back to the Auvergne to walk the Stevenson, or maybe connect to the Way of Arles via the Regordane track...

Magazine editor: would love a bit of help!

Hi Helen This links to a photo on my blog. http://slowcamino.files.wordpress.com/2 ... tampnd.jpg It shows my very first stamp, from the cathedral at Le Puy. I sure remember getting that stamp! I don't know if I've got the pre-shrunk version still, but you can make use of what I've got...

    Hi from Italy

Hi Julo By pure chance, I was introduced to pilgrimage by the association for the Via Francigena, who were holding a promotion on the first day I arrived in Siena. My first pilgrimage was through the streets of Siena, with keen young members of the association showing the way. My first rural...

Looking for people who may want to join me on the El Camino

JC, there may be some advantages in taking companions with you to do the Camino, but many of us find it's a bit like carting oranges to Florida. Whatever you decide, whatever the weather, whatever the ups and downs...have a great time! Excited for you Rob

    Greetings from Downunder

Julie, I'm rarely in Sydney these days and time is taken up with family etc. But I hope to move a little closer in the future, and, if that happens, I'll look you all up. Sounds like a great little fellowship. Every major city should have one. Incidentally, In my youth, the best Spanish food...

wondering about a walking partner June 2013

Julie, I'd be surprised if you don't have hundreds of walking partners to choose from in the month of June, all within a few days, and starting day one. If you are, as you say, extremely easy to walk with and have no set agenda you would be hard-pressed to remain alone, even if you were Greta...

    Camino Winter or Spring 2013

Some great advice there. As a winter/spring walker, I can recommend the experience - without guarantees, of course. Sillydoll mentions Margaret (Meredith), aka mspath, who is a cool weather walker with much experience. If you track through her posts or contact her when she is available, you'll...

    2014 Camino

Love the veterans. Walking the Camino again, and then again, is the ultimate recommendation to the rest of us. Best Rob

    Weather in the pyrenees

Just be prepared and stay flexible. Much of May was frightful in 2010 when I crossed the Pyrenees to get to Pamplona after starting in Le Puy. Even close to summer, people were getting into difficulties. However, when I resumed from Pamplona the following winter, people coming behind me from...

First time Camino-er leaving end of September.....

Shanetta, I started my first leg in Le Puy and ended in Pamplona, crossing the Pyrenees via Valcarlos because of the unexpected cold in May 2010. In February of 2011, I went back to the same hotel in Pamplona and just continued on. While I would love to cross the mountains via the pass...

New Pilgrimer who has 23 days in November

Mountain Mama, I'm a winter/spring walker. Cold caminos can be solitary, but the new friendships easier and more intimate. (When you walk as slow as me you have to be prepared to make new friends every day.) David (above) has some great ideas. I found the Frances almost deserted in late...

    from illinois searching

I'd done a lot of wilderness walking, biking, running, canoeing etc. But I always ended up the day in...Aussie wilderness! The great thing about the Camino is that you can rock into a town before sundown. Also, as well as birds and furry things and insects, there are heaps of people - my all...

Should we go in November or wait for another time?

I only go in cooler, less crowded times, so I'm biased. Also, you'll be finishing in Galicia, which is maritime and low elevation. I'd say...all good! Just stay dry. Let's us know how it goes. Rob
