If you're flying into Madrid and not staying there some of the buses pick up at the airport, which may be easier. San Sebastian is lovely, compact with an interesting old quarter, good food and lots of places to stay. Cheaper than Madrid, though it may be different in high season.
Just done this journey today! I went by bus from Madrid as it was considerably cheaper than train when I booked. Alsa.es is the website, takes 5.5 - 6 hours, depending on which departure you book - there are many. There may be other companies doing this route eg Flixbus. Bus prices are static...
Bevskia, to answer your question, it depends. Spanish train ticket prices are dynamic, like plane tickets . You may be able to buy a ticket in advance which is cheaper than a full priced ticket with discount. Or not. There's a full explanation, and much other useful information about trains in...
A great site for train journeys in Europe is seat61.com. it has excellent information and tells you the best way to book tickets for specific journeys, whether Trainline, national operator or others.
In the FAQ on the Renfe website there is a q about printing a ticket if you did not do so at the time of purchase. But it does seem that you have to be registered with Renfe. The link is https://www.renfe.com/es/en/help/faqs/ticket-purchasing
Very best of luck.
Now if anyone can tell me what...
Anyone else looking for train information I recommend www.seat61.com. It's an independent site set up by a rail enthusiast. It tells you all you need to know about train travel in Europe, including the best sites to buy tickets. RailEurope.com is another company like Trainline that has a good...
If you have time you can get from Amsterdam to Barcelona in a day by comfortable train. Fares from 74 euros if you book early enough. Details at https://www.seat61.com/international-trains/trains-from-Amsterdam.htm#Amsterdam-Spain.
It may be cheaper to buy a ticket at an advance purchase fare online, than to buy it with a Tarjeta Dorada when you get there. Much depends on how much you are travelling in Spain and whether you are able to plan in advance. Details at https://www.seat61.com/train-travel-in-spain.htm
In Portugal...
Train fares in Portugal are half price for over 65s. I'm British and thought it might have been for EU citizens only. But it is for everyone, I was offered it earlier this year. Though that's always slightly disappointing if you like to kid yourself that you don't look your age....
The cheapest way from Madrid to Seville is likely to be bus. See, for example, https://www.alsa.com/en/web/bus/destination/seville. But it takes over twice as long as the train, and the higher cost of the train is likely to be insignificant in the context of a journey from western Canada. For...
Renfe is notorious for opening bookings late: often less that 60 days ahead. More on this at https://www.seat61.com/european-train-booking-horizons.htm
I normally book European journeys through Rail Europe who were very helpful when I stupidly managed to book trips from A to B and B to C for...
Sadly, overnight trains to Spain and Portugal are not what they were. I believe the only route with an overnight component now is the Paris - Latour de Carol route, but that gets you into Barcelona too late for many connections. I've travelled the day route from Paris to Hendaye, and from there...
An excellent independent website, for anyone planning to travel by train is https://www.seat61.com/
It is particularly good on the best ways and times to book tickets, and on alternative routes.
I'm just back overland. My route was bus Santiago to Bilbao (www.alsa.es for long distance buses in Spain) night and most of day in Bilbao, evening bus to San Sebastian and overnight. San Sebastian to London by train (local train, TGV, Eurostar) It was 2 long day's travelling, which was why I...
