That looks like a good option, Jeff.
As Madrid, like many cities, has priced itself out of the affordable housing market, many people have moved to the towns and villages outside of the city. The cercanias trains are the commuter trains that come in and out from those surrounding towns.
I'm...
Hello Marilyn,
Welcome to the forum!
You may alaready have gottin this information by PM, but .... your travel issues aside, it is certainly possible to walk from Roncesvalles to santiago in 37 days. I did it in 30 days and while I didn't take "rest days" there were days when I walked a...
Hi Stevie,
You have Ivar's email and site at the bottom of these pages. He may be able to help you. I would figure to fly Iberia from Santiago to Valencia and get to Alicante by bus from there, no? Or train Santiago/Madrid/Alicante?
Best of luck to you, I hope you have great weather.
¡Qué...
I don't know what airline you're flying, but I've checked my pack on every flight I've taken and it comes right up with the other luggage - no unusual wait... It might be different with smaller or budget airlines.
Buen Camino,
Hi amgirl,
Sorry I didn't reply to you, but I was in Spain when you posted.
You are probably there now! And you have no doubt found your way to the Camino! So, have a wonderful time!
Buen Camino,
Hi!
You could walk from Barcelona...The Camino Catalán begins at the Monastery of Montserrat just a short distance north of Barcelona and meets up withthe Francés in Logroño. I was in Monsterrat last weekend and got a lovely guidebook. It is in Spanish though...
Buen Camino,
Hi, Ginn,
Since you've allowed yourself plenty of time, why not stay a day or so in Madrid to acclimate to the time change and see a little of the beautiful city? So much beautiful history, art and architecture!
Then you could take the 07:00 train from Atocha Station to Pamplona, have a...
I always fly Aer Lingus when flying to Ireland (which I do rather often) and can recommend them highly! Great food, good service, outstanding safety record .. I wouldn't fly to Ireland any other way.
Buen Camino,
Hi Bill,
i too, began from Madrid... but I was in Madrid for other reasons as well. IF you don't want to fly to Pamplona, you can get the train from Atocha to Pamplona, a bus to Roncesvalles and then a taxi over the mountain to SJPDP. I intended to begin in Roncesvalles and so I stopped witht...
Don't worry a bit, Arlene! I did the exact same thing as you - in July last year - also alone... You will have to make a conscious effort to stay alone! Yo will meet many wonderful friends and will only be alone as much as you choose to be.
Muy buena suerte and muy beun camino,
I used to fly to Ireland on an "open ticket" - you had the return, but could book the actual date when you decided what day you wanted to fly home (based on availability, of course!) I don't know if the airlines allow you to do that any more since my flying in the past 5-8 years has all been...
Thanks, Sil for updating that. It was spring 2006 when I stayed there. I guess now that they have the newly refurbished and beautiful Melia Reina Victoria across the street, they feel they've moved into a classier neighborhood! I still had a great stay there!
Buen Camino,
And I'll throw in my 2 pesetas! I like the Hostal Persal... it is just off the Plaza Santa Ana inthe Barrio Santa Ana - which is right where all the tapas bars are! Fine cafes, restaurants and a good breakfast included ... I had a single room with a bathroom for €30 (breakfast included)...
Hi Tony,
Welcome to the forum! We are neighbours - I live in CT and completed my first Camino in Aug 2007. There are other ways, but I traveled NY/Madrid. Train to Pamplona and then the bus to Roncesvalles. It is simple to get a taxi from Roncesvalles to SJPdP. I am most familiar with the...
Hi Janeh,
Hiring in car in Spain is quite expensive. Last year after my Camino I needed to return to Madrid but there were no places available on trains or buses (at least for many hours). I hired a car to drive back. I was lucky enough to find two Spanish girls who wanted to return to...
Hi Trundle,
You can also begin walking from Roncesvalles. Most of the Spaniards who walk the Camino begin there. I too, because I came north from Madrid (via Pamplona) decided to begin in Roncesvalles. It was recommended to me since I am not a "seasoned" hiker like you (and so many others)...
