TAP used to fly LCG-LIS-JFK which was not super early. Lisbon is a good alternative to Madrid. If you don’t take the early flight out of SCQ you may miss the flights to your desired US entry points. Good luck.
If you can fly into A Coruña it may be easier and cheaper. That may not be an option though, especially next year, who knows what flights and flight schedules may look like.
You may want to try https://www.sncf.com/en and book directly with the French Railways. If there’s an issue of any type, you’re dealing with the actual issuing company.
I see you’ve worked it out but for others looking for other convenient points of entry, Bordeaux (BOD) offers another option. Regular shuttle between the airport and station. Trains to Bayonne with a change to SJPP. From BOD, I was in SJPP in about 4 hours.
I’ll happily trade a delay in Dublin for never ending CV-19 confinement here in Dallas. The only up side is that we’re flirting with 40/104 with oppressive humidity so being inside right now isn’t so bad. Buen Camino my friend.
My experience with trains throughout Europe and certainly in France (if not on strike) is that they’re all good, some excellent. Depending upon the fare difference first class is not necessary, it’s a relatively short trip. A “quiet” car may be worth it though. TGV trains generally require a...
I highly recommend the DB Navigator (German Rail), it has schedules for trains throughout Europe, it’s easy to navigate and often has connections that are not shown on other sites. Very handy.
PattiCake5,
I just took a quick look, there’s a TAP Air Portugal flight from Chicago to Bordeaux via Lisbon. I flew them in 2017 and found them very comfortable and the fares were very reasonable. Bordeaux is a quick trip to Bayonne and a change to SJPP. I’d overnight in Bordeaux and catch the...
PattiCake5,
As a multi-million mile flyer on 2 different airlines and, I say that not to brag but more as a sad reality of being away from home far too much, I will share this. The more connections, the greater chance of something going wrong and that usually translates into delays, aggravation...
Could not find anything either way, it would probably depend upon what time you arrive/depart. If you can, the ANA Lounge in Terminal 1 opens at 0500, you can get a shower and light breakfast, max stay is 3 hrs. Visit w/shower is €40 if I remember correctly.
Didn’t really answer your question...
When I did the CF in 2017 I flew TAP from JFK-LIS-BOD and then home LCG-LIS-JFK. Fares were quite good with good connections. LIS was easy to navigate. I would certainly consider them when planning your inbound/outbound flights. Most of their US gateways are on the east coast but I think the...
Janet,
I’ve flown them many times and would recommend them. They offer layers of service, I usually take the mid-level which allows 1 checked bag and assigned seats. If you book ahead, the fares are often quite reasonable.
My recent experience at JFK was that you probably will not be allowed to carry your poles on although I did see one Pilgrim who had his poles (TSA can be inconsistent). That same Pilgrim got them taken away in Madrid and had to check them to A Coruña. Good luck, Buen Camino.
For checking schedules, I highly recommend the DB Connect app which is for the German Rail but it has schedules for most of Europe and shows connections that the Renfe app does not.
León Station is under construction but it doesn’t cause any confusion except maybe meeting someone. If they follow the signs, they’ll have no troubles.
BarryG,
When I did the CF 2 years ago, I flew in to Bordeaux. Easy bus to the train station and 1 quick change in Bayonne to get to SJPP. The train from Bayonne to SJPP was full of my soon to be Camino Family. An option anyway.
Buen Camino.
