Santiago to Barajas Transportation
TrenHotel is comfortable, and nice clean bed in 4 berth compartment. You may need your earplugs though, as the noise from the rails can be intrusive..... This probably won't affect you, travelling into the morning (08oohrs), but when I did the Madrid - Ponferrada run, I was somewhat concerned...- Travellingman

Santiago to Barajas Transportation
Check RENFE site. Trenhotel leaves Santiago 2233hrs on June 12th, arrives Madrid Chamartin 0802 June 13th. Short Cercanias ride to T4. 31.7 euros cama turista, "promo" fare. Be a lot more comfortable than the bus, I'm sure.- Travellingman

Get Tarjeta Dorada in USA
My experience booking Renfe tickets - forget trying to obtain a Tarjeta Dorada, just keep checking the Renfe site for "promo" fares - some amazing deals to be had in advance (6-10 weeks or so). I arrive at Barajas Airport 1100hrs May 7th, and leave on Tren Hotel from Chamartin 2230hrs the same day. So, about 10 hours to pass in Madrid.
