There are several choices. Biarritz airport is the closest. Many people fly into Madrid or Paris and take a train and/or bus to SJPdP. The Olympics and Paralympics are in Paris this summer, so that could affect transportation.

I live on the west coast, but I've had a couple of direct United flights to Newark from Porto.
I have also flown on TAP Porto - Lisbon - San Francisco. I was able to choose my seat even though I booked through the United website.

What are the prohibitions flying from Sweden? That's where your backpack will initially be scrutinized. There may not be another check of your carry-on bag before you board the flight in Paris.
I also prefer trains, but the trip on the bus is shorter, so I've taken the bus from Santiago to Porto twice. The buses are very comfortable, and the ride is not that long.
