It's very difficult to train for walking 30km days repetitively without walking 30km days repetitively. If your lifestyle allows then a few good hilly walks with a backpack is great. I've walked several caminos (including del Norte) and I always find the first few days fairly hard. However I am...
Sometimes I wonder if I walked the same Caminos as others. The camino del norte is an excellent walk. I think the OP has an issue comparing it to the Camino Frances. Its different. I quite liked not going through places which revolved/evolved around the Camino
You will get good and bad...
Albergue in San Sebastian opens July 1st. I found that out on June 30th. Got luck because there was one bed left at the youth hostel. Would book the youth hostel if I were to do it again. Thereafter no problems at all the digs
I lost my silk liner 3 days into my walk 2 years ago. Never replaced it but wish I had when I got to Galicia. It was June/July. Just used a towel to cover the matress.
The lady in the Albergue in Boo suggested we take the train. When I asked about buying a ticket she just laughed. The worst they can do, she said, was ask you to get off at the next stop. She had a fair point. We got off at the next stop.
Agree with a lot of the posts. That said, I met a German lady on the del Norte with her dog and they had a ball. The dog seemed to love it.She had a tent and was quite happy with the scenario. Depends on the dog.
I took the CSJ guide and the cicerone guide in 2013. I found the CSJ guide indecipherable (I'm a simple soul) The maps in the cicerone guide were very helpful. I got lost about 10 times but that's pretty good going for me. Getting lost is all part of it although it can get pretty tedious when it...
Firstly, well done on your upcoming retirement. What a great way to treat yourself.I would liken the first 7 days on the del Norte as an O' Ceberio type hike every day. Lots of ups and downs. For me the downs were more difficult. Past Santander it's pretty easy
The irony is if the local that if the local didn't want pilgrims traipsing on his/her land then hiding the arrows and having folks walking round in circles is only going to increase that
I took both guides last year. I found the CSJ guide (and it pains me to say it) indecipherable. The cicerone was very good. All be it a bit weighty. The Spanish pilgrims all had the Eroski app. Bit techy for me.
Great notes. I walked the del Norte last summer and, on the main, stayed in different places than you did. That's the beauty of the del Norte. I feared that there would be a lack of accommodation options but that's not the case.If you don't mind I'll add my notes below. mostly accommodation...
